Bates Smart Pty Ltd
Bates Smart began as the practise of the famous Victorian era architect, Joseph Reed, with his partners. Today it is known as Bates Smart Pty Ltd. After Reed's death the practice was continued by his remaining partners and carried his legacy. The partners continued working with the University, with in-fill buildings, renovations and were also early adapters of Modernism in architecture with their design of the iconic Wilson Hall, 1956.

The Engineering Building was designed by Reed and partners in 1899 and later the Mining Building and the Metallurgy School was by Bates Smart & Partners in 1906.

Bates Smart added the first floor in 1908, in the single storied Elisabeth Murdoch Building by Joseph Reed.
