Gathering at Atherton Gardens, Fitzroy, after the NAIDOC marches
The high-rise towers at Atherton Gardens Estate, Fitzroy, were built by the Housing Commission of Victoria during the 1960s.
As demonstrated by this collection of photographs taken by Maree Clarke in the early 1990s, Atherton Gardens was used as a meeting place for the local community. After attending the NAIDOC march, people would gather at Atherton Gardens to have food and refreshments. It was also an opportunity to catch up with family, friends, and other members of the community, particularly those who had travelled from all over Victoria to Melbourne to participate in the march.
"I love those photos [of people gathering at Atherton Gardens]. That was a really good day after the march... 'cause mum [Alice Clarke] had been down for that one and came on the march and came to the barbie."

"...and you also had the feed at the end of it... whilst there was music, it wasn't like a big concert at the end, it was just... [a] barbecue and community getting together."
