A life in photographs
With so many photographs to draw upon in the Grainger Museum collection, it is easy to illustrate a life in rich detail, from birth to death. This selection of photographs includes images from Grainger in the cradle in 1882 in Adelaide, Australia, to one of the last photographs taken of the ageing and ill musician in the 1950s in White Plains, New York, USA. The obsession with self documentation in a public sphere, in the world of Facebook and selfies, can seem like a very contemporary phenomenon... However, in the Grainger Collection we can see that the fashioning of a public visual persona is much older than the 21st century.
