Glass Lantern Slides
Before photography and film, lantern slides opened up the world for us to see. Originally, images were painted onto glass and projected via candlelight. Later, electricity and photography enabled much bigger images to be shared in higher resolution.
The University of Melbourne Archives’ Australian Red Cross Collection includes lantern slides that were used for talks about the war effort, for engaging the community about the need for membership, fundraising and blood donations through cinema screenings, and for rehabilitation activities after World War II.
