Fully Digitised Items from O'Donnell's Collection

Thanks to previous initiatives unrelated to this project, a number of items that were in Nicholas O'Donnell's possession have been digitised and made available to the public:

  • Scribal Manuscripts

Fully digitised versions of two 19th-century manuscripts (MS Táin Bó Cuailnge, MS Brisleach Mhór Mhuighe Muirtheimhne), written in Co. Cork by members of the Ó Longáin scribal family and purchased in Melbourne by O'Donnell in 1903. Available, with descriptions by Pádraig Ó Macháin, from Irish Script on Screen (ISOS). To access, click on Collections, then select Newman College from the drop-down menu under Australia.

  • O'Donnell's Scrapbooks

Containing newsclippings, letters and photographs. In two volumes: December 1911-May 1916 and May 1916-January 1920. Available for download from the website of the Academic Centre, St Mary's College and Newman College.

  • O'Donnell's Photograph Albums

"Photograph albums belonging to Nicholas Michael O'Donnell. O'Donnell, a West Melbourne doctor, Irish nationalist and gaelic scholar, was trained in photography by the well-known Melbourne photographer Charles Nettleton. O'Donnell's photographs depict family scenes, areas in and around Melbourne, construction of St Patrick's Cathedral, various photographs of the Gisborne area, and photographs of Irish delegates and Irish Members of the British Parliament, visiting Melbourne on fundraising campaigns, over the 1890-1912 period."
