On the occasion for which this mass was composed see Stockigt (‘After Six Weeks’, Table 10.2), where it is suggested that Missa gratias agimus tibi was composed for the churching ceremony of Maria Josepha held on 7.10.1730 (birthday of her husband, Saxon Electoral Prince Friedrich August II) following the much-desired birth of Saxon Prince Franz Xavier (b 25.9.1730), a birth which was described in the annual letter to Rome as being ‘not unlike a second Samuel [...] the result not so much of the prayers of the mother as of the two saints.’ [Xavier and Benno: the full name of Prince Xavier was Franz Xavier Albert August Ludwig Benno]. Annuae literae Regiae Missionis Dresdensis Ao 1730. ARSI (I-Rar), Boh 147, 19.
In the later ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’ (c1784) score and parts for the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus are listed for [Messa:] No: 10) Messa (III/Z/10/1).
