In the later ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’ (c1784) score and parts for the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus are listed for [Messa:] No: 9) Messa Charitatis (III/Z/9/4). The scoring given for all sections of the Mass is: ‘à 4 voci co’ VVni. Ob: Vla, Fl. Corni, ed Org.’ The incipits for the Credo, Sanctus, Agnus are almost identical with those given for the Missa Nativitatis Domini, ZWV 8: III/Z/8/1.
The undated Missa Charitatis is the last of a trilogy of ‘Ordinary’ Mass settings by Zelenka bearing the titles of the three Theological Virtues: Faith, Hope, and Charity. They are: Missa Spei (ZWV 5) ‘1724’ (date given by Norbert Schulz, 16); Missa Fidei (ZWV 6) dated ‘25 Novem. 1725’; Missa Charitatis (ZWV 10) c1725–7.
Zelenka’s mannerisms of notation indicate that the score of Missa Charitatis was prepared between late 1725 and late 1727/8. The dates proposed for this Mass setting are: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, c1727; Sanctus, c1726; Benedictus, late 1727/8; Osanna, late 1727/8; Agnus Dei, c1726. It is possible that movements dated c1726 (Sanctus; Agnus Dei) were originally written for the Missa Nativitatis (ZWV 8). The position of Missa Charitatis in Zelenka’s Inventarium suggests it was finalised after Missa Nativitatis (1726) and the now-missing Missa Corporis Domin[ic]i (c1727).
See Zelenka-Dokumentation, 287, ZWV 10 (given as Missa Caritatis).
This mass is listed by name in the Breitkopf non-thematic catalogue (Ostermesse 1779): ‘Missa Charitatis, Kyrie cum Gloria & Credo, à 2 Corni, 2 Oboi, 2 Violini, Viola, 4 Voci, e Fondamento. P. 4 thl. St. 3 thl. 16 gl.’ (1769). The original scoring (which included three oboes and two horns) suggests that the work was also listed in the Breitkopf non-thematic catalogue (Michaelmesse1761): ‘Missa, à 2 Corni, 3 Oboi, 2 Violini, Viola, 4 Voci, Basso e Organo. a 4 thl.’
