See Zelenka-Dokumentation, 131, Nr. 45; 287, ZWV 11.
Missa Circumcisionis Domini was almost certainly intended to be heard on 1.1.1729, feast of the Circumcision OL (titular feast of the Society of Jesus). Earlier, however, on the day of this feast in 1724 (1.1.1724) the Dresden Diarium Missionis reported that Zelenka had composed an attractive new Mass (which was long) and the Prince and Princess had attended its performance. (‘Composuit novum Sacrum elegans Dominus Zelenka; interfuit toto Cantato quod longum fuit, Serenissimi Princeps et Principessa. ...’). Is it possible that parts of Missa Circumcisionis were composed late in 1723 for New Year’s Day 1724, then reworked and finalised late in 1728 for performance of New Year’s Day 1729? Note that in his thesis of 1944 Norbert Schulz gave the date of Missa Circumcisionis as ‘1723’.
This is one of two masses by Zelenka (both now missing) once in the possession of Johann Friedrich Fasch that were listed into the Concert-Stube of the Zerbst court, 1743.
Entered into the Breitkopf non-thematic catalogue (Michaelmesse 1761) as ‘Missa, à 2 Clarini, Tymp. 2 Corni, ô 2 Clarini con Princ. 2 Oboi, 2 Violini, Viola, 4 Voci, Basso e Organo. a 5 thl.’. Perhaps this is also the listing in the catalogue (Ostermesse 1769) as ‘Kyrie cum Gloria, à 4 Clar. Tymp. 2 Violini, 2 Oboi, Viola, Basso, 4 Voci e Fondamento. P. 3 thl. St. 2 [?] thl. 12 gl.’.
