The dates given by Zelenka suggest that this Mass was composed for performance during the octave of the feast of St Francis Xavier, 1729. St Francis Xavier was the Patron Saint of Maria Josepha, whose birth- and name-day (8 December) fell within the Xavier octave. The name Franz Xaver or Franziska Xaveria was included in the baptismal names of each child born to Maria Josepha.
In the later ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’ (c1784) score and parts for the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, and Agnus are listed for [Messa] No: 4) Divi Xaverii (III/Z/8/4).
On this setting, see Zelenka-Dokumentation, 132, Nr. 50; 287, ZWV 12, and Stockigt, ‘The Historical Background’. Preface to score Zelenka: Missa Divi Xaverii, ed. Vaclav Luks (Praha: Bärenreiter, 2016), v–vii.
This is one of two masses by Zelenka (both now missing) once in the possession of Johann Friedrich Fasch that were listed into the Concert-Stube of the Zerbst court, 1743.
