Remarks

Four Caprici were composed in Vienna 1717–1718 for entertainments hosted by Saxon Electoral Prince Friedrich August during his courtship of Habsburg Archduchess Maria Josepha.
Mus. 2358-N-3: Bound autogr. score. (Bass line not figured). Composed in Vienna.
Cover (Cx upper left): Label (not from 1765): Schranck No. II. | 28 Fach 5. Lage. | No. 1.) Caprice | co’ VVni. Oboi, Corni Viola e Basso. | Partitura e Parti. 1.[4?] St. | Del Sigr. Zelencka. | Incipit
Head of score: J:N:J:C: No: 1 (non-autogr.). Pencil (Cx 1151)
Mus. 2358-N-3a
Set of ten non-autograph parts kept in wrapper with label to correspond with the new location when Zelenka’s instrumental works were taken into Schrank II:
Schranck No. II | 28. Fach 5. Lage | No. 1.) Caprice | co’ WWni Oboi, Corni Viola e Basso | Partitura e Parti 4. (‘10’ is pencilled over ‘4’) St. | del [Sigr Zelencka].
Cx 1151 is pencilled onto the parts.
Ten non-autogr. parts (titles in Zelenka’s hand) for: Violino 1; Violino 1; Violino 2; Violino 2; Violoncello; Violone; Hautbois 1; Hautbois 2; Fagotto; Cornu 2. The first horn part is missing.
The parts for Hautbois 1 and Cornu 2 have numbers of bars rest written in pencil, an indication that the players were inexperienced in reading the manner of rests notated in blocks. The original horn players of Zelenka’a Capriccios were almost certainly the young Tobias Butz and Johann Joseph Götzel who were in Vienna when the Saxon Electoral Prince Friedrich August II was living there (1717–1719). See Herbert Seifert in ‘Zelenka in Wien’, 187, n. 30.
Unlisted in the only remaining Volume of c1784 (contents of Schrank III) of the ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’ (c1784) due to relocation to Schrank II.
Zelenka-Dokumentation, 307, ZWV 182; Stockigt, Jan Dismas Zelenka, 48–53, and Ex. 2.5.
Also see Schranck No: II. Das erhaltene Instrumentalmusikrepertoire, 152, 28/5 where the number is given as Cx 1150.
