Four Caprici were composed in Vienna 1717–1718 for entertainments hosted by Saxon Electoral Prince Friedrich August during his courtship of Habsburg Archduchess Maria Josepha.

The original horn players of Zelenka’a Capriccios were almost certainly the young Tobias Butz and Johann Joseph Götzel who were in Vienna when the Saxon Electoral Prince Friedrich August II was living there (1717–1719). See Herbert Seifert in ‘Zelenka in Wien’, 187, n. 30.
