Remarks
Damaged autogr. score of a work performed at the request of the Clementinum College Prague. Zelenka’s title (see below) reports that at the time of composition (1709) he was living in the house of his earliest-known patron: Count Johann Hubert Hartig.
Autograph title on blue-grey wrapper (damaged and only partly legible: reading after Zelenka-Dokumentation, 102, Dok. 1a): Mu(sica fa)cta | (ad) | Sepulc(hrum S)acrum | in | Magno Collegio Clementino | Veterae Pragae | Composita et directa ibidem | Ad requisitionem ejusdem Collegij | à Joanne Disma | Zelenka. tunc | in Domo Ill. DDni | Comitis de Hartig existente | Anno | 1709.
Dedication at conclusion of the score: A M D G
Reports are given almost annually in the Dresden Diarium Missionis and in the annual letters of music being sung at the Holy Sepulchre erected in Dresden’s royal chapel during Holy Week. For example, in 1713 the Diarium report stated that on Holy Saturday (15 April), music was performed at the Sepulchre. (‘Hora 7. facta est musica ad sepulchrum ...’). The music sung on these occasions is not known.
Over time, both the apparatus itself and the music performed there increased in magnificence.
Zelenka-Dokumentation, 102, Dok. 1a.
For discussion of this work, with complete text and several musical examples, see Stockigt, Jan Dismas Zelenka, 7–23.
In the ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’ (c1784) score only is listed under 3. Cantata | Ad Sepulchrum Sacr: No: 1 Immisit Dominus a 4 voci con Stromenti. (III/Z/22/3).
