In 1735 Zelenka’s oratorio Gesù al Calvario (ZWV 62) was performed in Dresden’s Hofkirche. (Fürstenau, II, 41, claimed that it was written in 1731). Composed in two parts, Zelenka’s remarks on the score of this work state that this oratorio was to be heard over Good Friday and Holy Saturday (7–8 April in 1735). The journal of the 15-year-old Saxon Electoral Prince Friedrich Christian, however, gives different information. He claimed that on Good Friday 1735 he heard Gesù al Calvario (which took 2 hours, that is, approximately the time required for a performance), whereas on Holy Saturday Zelenka’s earlier oratorio Il Serpente del bronzo was performed – a work Friedrich Christian claimed he also had heard in the previous year. See Remarks under III/Z/24/2.
