Remarks

Zelenka entered into his Inventarium a set of 33 psalms under the title: ‘Psalmi | Vespertini | totius anni. | Johannes Disma Zelenka. | qui habentur in libris’. By 1765, scores for only 23 of Zelenka’s cycle of 33 Vespers psalms were catalogued as being kept in two ‘Fachen’ (compartments) and four ‘Lagen’: III/Z/21/3; III/Z/21/4; III/Z/22/1; III/Z/22/2.
The now-missing cover title – ‘33 Psalmi insieme’ (literally ‘psalms together’, but see II/P/11/5 where another cover for the set was held with Missa S. Antonii Paduani by Franz Poppe) – is given in the SLB card catalogue entry. Apart from psalms required for Holy Week, this collection served all Vespers psalm requirements of the Dresden Catholic court church.
The numbers of this collection – three cycles totalling 33 settings – suggest a conscious numerical plan by Zelenka. (The Dresden Catholic court church was, and remains, dedicated to the Holy Trinity).
Today, scores for 23 settings from this collection survive in SLUB. The information that 23 of the original 33 scores were catalogued in 1765 demonstrates that ten scores already had gone missing, even though sets of parts for each of these works were listed – sources also now missing from Dresden since 1945/6. The missing scores are Confitebor tibi Domine (ZWV 74); Laudate pueri (ZWV 78); Beatus vir (ZWV 77) Laudate Dominum (ZWV 86), as well as six settings for a Marian Vespers: (Dixit ZWV 69; Laudate pueri ZWV 79; Laetatus sum ZWV 89; Nisi Dominus ZWV 93; Lauda Jerusalem ZWV 103; Magnificat ZWV 106).
Mus. 2358-D-61 (ZWV 68), from which the above incipit comes, is an autograph score with grey-blue wrapper with non-autograph title: D# (upper left) Nro 1 (upper right) | Dixit à 4 | C.A.T.B. | J.D.Z.
Autograph date with dedication are given at the conclusion of the score: Dresda 1726 li 23 Marz: A M D G V M OO SS H AA P in R.
Autogr. trumpet and timpani scores for Dixit Dominus (Mus. 2358-D-61,1: ZWV 68) and the Magnificat (Mus.2358-D-61,13: ZWV 108), and non-autogr. part material for Tromba 1; Tromba 2; Tÿmpano survive to accompany Dixit Dominus (Mus. 2358-D-61,1b).
Several concordances of works (especially the two Magnificat settings) are found in The Czech Republic, Germany, and the USA.
Literature: Each work is itemized in Appendix 1, ‘Zelenka’s Vespers psalm settings’ of Stockigt’s thesis: ‘The Vespers Psalms of Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679–1745) in the Liturgy and Life of the Dresden Catholic Court Church’. (PhD diss. University of Melbourne, 1994), a study not cited by RISM.
See also ‘Hinweise auf die Originalaufführungen von Zelenkas Vesperpsalmen’, Zelenka-Studien II, 101–43.
In the ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’ (c1784) each of the surviving 23 settings was catalogued individually with an incipit given: III/Z/19/3 to III/Z/20/1. At that time, a score and set of parts existed for each listed setting.
