In addition to the ‘33 Psalmi insieme’, Zelenka made a further eight settings of Vespers psalms. He listed this group in his Inventarium under the title: ‘Psalmi varii | J. D. Z. Separatim | Scripti’.
Yet another catalogue of psalms required for Vespers for a Confessor (Dixit; Confitebor; Beatus vir; Laudate pueri; Laudate Dominum and the Magnificat) was prepared by Zelenka in the mid 1730s. Titled ‘Psalmi varii’, it incorporated Zelenka’s own psalms listed under ‘Separatim Scripti’ together with psalms by other composers from his collection. Instrumentation of these works was standardised and expanded with the addition of woodwinds, and the basso continuo section was mainly replaced by organ. Although settings from this separate set of psalm compositions by Zelenka (c1728–early 1730s) were taken over into the ‘Psalmi varii’, not one of the ‘33 Psalmi insieme’ entered this later collection – an indication of the special nature of the ‘33 Psalmi insieme’. The lists of works contained in ‘Psalmi varii’ are given in Zelenka-Dokumentation, 221–3.
This Dixit Dominus (above) is a short, simple setting of psalm 109 (ZWV 67), and was probably intended for performance by the Kapellknaben of Dresden’s Catholic court church (a group that by 1732 had grown to 17 members, including the organist Uhlig and singer Ritszchel).
Both RISM and Michael Driscoll have pointed out that on the cover of this score Zelenka wrote ‘Ad regias agni dapes’. This is the Vespers hymn for Saturday in Easter-week, and after on Sundays and week-days when no feast occurs until the first Vespers of the Ascension. This hymn gives a time frame for at least one performance of this setting, perhaps even a time frame for the composition.
