Asperges me is sung at a solemn mass (except the Easter season and Palm Sunday) to accompany the sprinkling with holy water by the celebrant as part of an entrance ritual. The first report of the singing of the Asperges in the Dresden Catholic court church is given in a Diarium Missionis entry 6.2.1724 (Dominica V. post Epiphaniam, and feast day of St Dorotheae, Virg. M.): A note stated that on this day, for the first time, Asperges me, composed by Zelenka, was heard. (‘NB: Incepimus hodie Asperges me prima vice; Dominus Zelenka illud composuit’).
In the ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’ (c1784) score and parts are listed under the heading Asperges me Dupl. (III/Z/19/2).
