An early reference to the singing of this hymn in the Dresden Catholic court church is recorded in the Diarium Missionis, 1710: “7.3. Hodie P. Nerlich incepit conciones quadragesimales hora quarta post meridiem. Tertio quadrante ad quartam decantatum est figuraliter Miserere coram exposito Venerabilii, dictis versibus ... tectum est velo Venerabile, post concionem retectum et cantus Germanicus in choro decantatus. Tandem Pange lingua et solennis benedictio. Ultimo O Lamb Gottes.’ (Today Father Nerlich began the Lenten sermons at 4. p.m. At 3.45 the Miserere was sung figurally in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. ... [then] the Sacrament was covered in a veil and after the sermon it was uncovered and a German chant [cantus] was sung in choro. Finally, the Pange lingua and Solemn Blessing and last of all, O Lamm Gottes).
