Title page: No: 3 (non-autogr.) | Litaniae | pro Festo S. Fr. Xaverii | à 4 Voc.con Strom. | di Giov. Heinichen | Mes. 9br 1724.
Conclusion of score: 18 M (timing of the performance of this work).
Following her arrival in Dresden (1719), Electoral Princess Maria Josepha ordered the singing of the Litanies of St Francis Xavier throughout the octave of this saint to whom she was particularly devoted. (Feast day: 3 December). The first report of a performance of Heinichen’s Litaniae de Sancto Xaverio (Mus. 2398-D-32) is given in the Dresden Diarium Missionis, 3.12.1724: ‘Post Vesperas quas Dominus Heiningen produxit cum Regiis Musicis fuerunt Litaniae de S. Francisco Xaverio’. (After Vespers, which Heinichen produced with the royal musicians, the Litanies of S. Francisco Xaverio [were heard]). The musical settings for Dresden’s Hofkirche of these Xaverian Litanies are considered to be something of a rarity. See Magda Marx-Weber, ‘Bemerkungen zu Zelenkas Litaneivertonungen’, in ZS II: 145–52.
For this feast in 1724, Heinichen also set the hymn Iste Confessore: ‘Hymnus pro Festo S. Francisci Xaverii et aliorum Sanctorum’, dated ‘Mes. 9br [November] 1724 (Mus. 2398-D-32) – a work unlisted in this Catalogo (1765).
See Horn (Hkm, 76). The Latin text and English translation of the Litaniae ad S. Franciscum Xaverium is published by Stockigt in Jan Dismas Zelenka, 180–83.
