Transcription

Laet ons Neêrlands Helden roemen,
Die de laetste Batavier
Nooit, dan met ontzag, zal noemen!
Dat ons loof hunn' schedel fier!
Laet ons hun gedacht'nis eeren,
Meêr dan gloeiend goud waerdeeren!
Daer, door hunne trouw en moed,
Neêrlands Vrijheid is behoed.
'k Zie op Zee de Ruyter praelen;Langs den Theems den trotschen Brit
Knarssen, om het Zegepraclen
Van dien halsvriend van de Wit:
'k Zie hem vloot bij vloot verjagen;
Volk bij volk den vreê doen vraegen;
Neêrland redden, keer op keer;
Sneuv'len op het bed van eer.

* * *

'k Zie de Witten, als Pilaeren,
Voor de zaek der vrijheid staen:
Woede, en haet, en lijfsgevaeren,
Onverschrokken, tegen gaen.
'k Zie hen Nêerlands grootheid staven,Meêr dan 't immer vorsten gaven;
Doch ter slagtbank hêen gesleurd,
En, voor trouwe dienst, verscheurd.
'k Zie nog grooter gruwelstukken!
'k Zie 's Lands Vader, Barneveld,
Aen het heilig regt ontrukken,
Opgeofferd aen 't geweld;
Hem, den schrik van 't magtig Spanje,
Grootheids stichter van Orange,
Neêrlands vriend, den vriend van God,
Sterven op het moordschavot.

* * *

'k Zie nog and're kloeke Helden,
Die, met pen of heldenstael,
Zich in de open bresse stelden,
Voor het veege Lecuwendael.
'k Zie de Groot met lauren praelen;
Trompen, Zweertsen en van Galen;
Duizend and'ren, grootsch bekroond,

PIETER VREEDE.
Let us celebrate the Dutch Heroes,
Who will never name the last Batavier with anything but respect!
That we praise their skull proud!
Let us honour their memory,
Appreciate [them] more than glowing gold!
There, because of their loyalty and courage,
The freedom of the Netherlands is preserved.
I see De Ruyter parade on the sea:
Along the Thames the proud Brit
Grinds, because of the victory-parade
Of that best friend of De Wit:
I see him chase fleet by fleet away;
Ask people after people for peace;
Save the Netherlands, time and again;
Die on the bed of honour.

I see the De Witts, like pillars,
Stand before the matter of freedom:
Rage, and hate, and bodily dangers,
Undaunted oppose.
I see them establish the Netherland’s greatness,
More than any monarchs gave;
Yet dragged to the slaughterhouse,
And, for loyal services, ripped apart.
I see even greater horrors!
I see the father of the land, Barneveld,
Wrest away from holy justice,
Sacrificed to the violence;
Him, the fright of the powerful Spain,
Founder of the greatness of Orange,
The Netherland’s friend, the friend of God,
Die upon the murderers’ scaffold.

I also see other bold heroes,
Who, with the pen of hero’s steel,
Positioned in the open gaps,
Before the hostile Dutch.
I see De Groot parade with laurels;
Tromp, Sweerts and Van Galen;
Thousands others, crowned great,
For the loyalty shown by them.
Oh that their silent graves,
Are covered with laurels,
So long as the honour of the brave men of the Netherlands
Does not provide the Netherlands with disgust!
Let us, above all, observe them,
Who cruelly murdered the stately ambition!
Such a name receives highest praise,
Who was doomed by life!
