About
The Abbey Art Centre Digital Repository is a digital archive, retrospectively documenting the work of artists who lived at the Abbey Art Centre in New Barnet, outside London, during its first decade of existence, from 1946 to 1956. The repository includes artworks made during this decade, either at the Abbey or shortly before or after an artist's residency there, as well as archival photographs and documents. In the absence of any analogue Abbey archive, the repository collates relevant material from public and private collections in an attempt to better understand the Abbey's role in postwar Australian and British art.
The repository is hosted by the University of Melbourne and developed in collaboration with researchers from Monash University; The National Art School, Sydney; and Aberystwyth University, Wales, UK. It is part of a broader research project, The Abbey Art Centre: Reassessing postwar Australian art, 1946-1956, funded by the Australian Research Council, 2020-2023 (DP 200102794).
