Educating Students With Disabilities During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Lessons Learned From Commerce Independent School District

Subject

Educating Students With Disabilities During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Description

Authors Brunnow and Hutt collaborated with Dr Tremmel, Assistant Superintendent and Myers, County SSA Director of Special Education to share and document in what ways and through what means the Commerce Independent School District (CISD) in North Texas bucked the trend of rural schools underperforming in the transition to remote learning. The paper outlines the demographics of the school catchment area in context of broader data and describes the relationship between the CISD and its supporting Special Education Unit. It notes and explores the 5 key themes and innovations which led to CISD’s relative success: (a) effective communication, (b) collaboration, (c) professional development and resource distribution, (d) compliance, and (e) effective translation of state and federal guidelines. The paper contains tables, example communications, steps taken and the decisions behind (and effectiveness of) each step. This paper is written for those working in the disability education sector.
