Remarks
Autogr. score with cover. No wrapper; no label; no title page. Pencil (Cx 1153b)
The title of the first movement, Capricio, has led to the work being classified as the fifth of the set of five Capriccios. This Catalogo of 1765, however, lists the work as a Sinfonie (no 2). Each movement of this work has a title: 1. ‘Capricio’; 2. Menuet 1–2; 3. Il Contendo; 4. Il Furibondo; 5. Vilanella.
Dedication and date: A M D G V B M OO SS H AA P I R. 18 Maji 1729.
Under ‘Galla-Tage, So in Dreßden celebriret werden’, the HStCal for 1729 gave the date of the Gala celebration for the King’s birthday as 21 May (‘Den 21. Maj. Ihrer Majestät des Königes in Pohlen und Churfürstens zu Sachsen, Herrn Friedrichs August Geburths=Tag in Galla’)—that is, three days following the completion by Zelenka of this Sinfonie. This announcement in the HStCal suggests that this work was commissioned for celebrations by the Dresden court in the absence of the king because at that time August II was in Warsaw where his birthday was celebrated on 12 May. Meanwhile, on 11 May the Electoral Prince and Princess and their courts left Dresden for Moritzburg intending to stay for some time (‘einige zeit verblieben worden’). They returned to Dresden on 4 June. Thus, it is likely that this Sinfonie was performed at the gala event held at Moritzburg in May 1729 to mark the king’s birthday.
This work is unlisted in the ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’ (c1784) due to relocation to Schrank II.
Zelenka-Dokumentation, 132, Dok, 48; 308, ZWV 190. Also see Schranck No: II. Das erhaltene Instrumentalmusikrepertoire, 153, where the number is given as Cx 1153b.
