Composed and directed by Zelenka for performance (and re-performance) at the Clementinum College Prague as part of the coronation celebrations of Emperor Charles VI and Empress Elisabeth Christine as King and Queen of Bohemia, 1723. Zelenka re-used several items from this Melodrama in subsequent works. See, for example, the motets Angelus Domini (ZWV 161; III/Z/13/1), O Magnum Mysterium (ZWV 171; III/Z/13/6), Pro quos criminis (ZWV 172; III/Z/13/8), the Te Deum of 1724 (ZWV 145; III/Z/15/1), and possibly a now-missing Regina coeli (ZWV 131; III/Z/16/12).
On Jesuit documentation and libretti on the Prague performances, see Vojtešková and Stockigt, ‘Zpráve o návštěvě císaře Karla VI. s chotí v Klementinu v roce 1723’, 351–9. The enormous success of the production and complete approval of Charles VI and his consort was reported to Rome in the annual letter from the Clementinum College. See Jan Dismas Zelenka, p. 124. See also Kohlhase, ‘Zelenkas geistliche Parodien’ in ZS II, 419–34, and Zelenka-Dokumentation,114, Dok. 17; 305, ZWV 175.
In the ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’ (c1784) the work is listed without score and parts under Melodramma de S. Wenceslao à 5 voci conc. co’VVni, Viola, Tromb: Timp: ed Org. (III/Z/22/6). A large X accompanies the entry.
