Missa Fidei is the second of a trio of ‘Ordinary’ Mass settings by Zelenka bearing the titles of the three Theological (or Heavenly) Virtues—Faith (Fides), Hope (Spes), and Charity (Charitas). According to Norbert Schulz Missa Spes (ZWV 5) was dated 1724. Missa Fidei (ZWV 6) was dated by Zelenka ‘25 Novem. 1725’, and Missa Charitatis (ZWV 10) comes from c1727.
Missa Fidei might have been composed for the feast of St Francis Xavier, 1725. A report of the music for the feast in that year given in the Dresden Diarium Missionis (3.12.1725) notes Zelenka’s musical contributions: ‘Cantatum cum assistentia [...] Musicam produxit D. Zelenka’.
On this setting, see Zelenka-Dokumentation, 128, Dok. 34; 286, ZWV 6.
Concordance?:
Inventarium (Slaný: 1751). A mass in C attributed to ‘Zelinka’ is listed under Missae Breviores Nr. VII as: ‘Missa ex C. à C.A.T.B. Violinis 2bus, Clarinis 2bus et Tympanis necessariis Auctore Sigl. Zelinka.’ (No oboes are included. The only wind instruments listed in the collection of the Slaný Piarist college are four trumpets (Tubae Campestres), two horns (Litui), and wooden instruments for funerals (Tubuli lignii pro pompa funebri).
In the later ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’ (c1784) score and parts are listed for [Messa:] No: 21) Kyrie; Gloria (III/Z/2/4.).
