Remarks
Autogr. score (damaged). Parts are missing. Abbreviated version of Heinichens ’s second mass (1721: Mus. 2398-D-13, a work not listed into this Catalogo, 1765). Cover label (non-autogr.) No. 3). Missa 4ta (abbreviata 1727) | Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus. Agnus | à 4 voci con Stromenti | incipit | di Heinichen. Title page: No. 3 (non-autogr.) | Missa 4ta | (abbreviata 1727) | à 4 Voc. con | 2 Corni di Caccia | Violini | Hautbois etc. | di Giov. Heinichen.
The first version of this mass (Mus. 2398-D-13; M 2) was performed on 29 June 1721 (Feast of SS Peter & Paul). The Dresden Diarium Missionis reported ‘Hora 11 musicam celebriorem fecerunt Regii Musici Capellae Magistro Serenissimi Principis Kyrie et Gloria novum producente’. (At 11 o’clock, the King’s musicians added lustre to the music. The Kapellmeister of the Prince produced [producente] a new Kyrie and Gloria).
Following a decision reported in the Dresden Diarium Missionis on 28.10.1725 – ‘debebit Gloria et Credo constanter esse breve’ (The Gloria and Credo will always need to be brief) – Heinichen began to shorten his earlier mass settings.
On this work see Horn (Hkm, 71–3, 84).
