Remarks

Bound volume containing copies of five psalm settings, each with original blue-grey or pale brown cover. The Magnificat, listed with these psalms in Zelenka’s Inventarium, now is missing from Dresden, and it was not listed by Eitner. Parts are not shown in the Catalogo 1765 to accompany this setting. Wolfgang Horn states (Hkm, 133) that the identification of this Vespers cycle attributed to Annibale Pio Fabri may be traced back to Moritz Fürstenau.
Title page 1: C (left) Nr 3 (right) | Fabri (hand of Zelenka). Centre: Schranck No. I | F 13. Fach, 5. Lage. The remainder is obliterated by a catalogue label to correspond with the entry in the missing Catalogo (c1784): Schranck No. I. | Lit. F. 14. Fach 7. Lage | Laudate pueri | à 4 voci | co’ VVni ed Org.| Partitura sola | del Sigr Fabri.
This set of psalms must have been acquired by Zelenka before he assembled the Psalmi varii (pre-1735). Each score of these psalms (de Confessore) bears signs of revision by Zelenka, including the addition of orchestration marks (‘Tutti’, ‘Solo’, ‘VV’ – implying the addition of oboes), additions to the string parts, figuring of and alterations to the bass line, addition of dynamics, articulation, and marks of tempo.
Although Eitner reported that these settings were in the hand of Zelenka, Horn (‘Die wichtigsten Schreiber’,164, 174) identifies the copyist as ZS O.
Fabri’s musical connections and the circuits he travelled as a singer (including London seasons for Handel) place him within one of the streams of performers/composers whose works are incorporated into Zekenka’s repertoire of Vespers psalms.
On this setting see Stockigt, ‘The Vespers Psalms of Jan Dismas Zelenka’, App. 2, No. 38.
