Flat stamped headed nails comprising of T-Head nail, wide flanged headed nail, 2 narrow flanged headed nails, 5 pyramid head & mimicks
good condition
Flat stamped heads appear c1825 in USA and are still made there. (Tremont, Mass) T-shaped heads are found in the Western District c1870, and are still made in Scotland. Writing at the back of the card: RELEVANT DATES; All this selection of nails, with the possible exception of the 1894 nail, show a shear cut from one direction only. This suggests a riding bed method of cutting the nail shanks. Robinson developed a machine for cutting 4 rows of stamped nails in 1860; The only nail showing what I would take to be Kingham's patent head of 1868 is the "Rosehill" Grasmere fragment, which came from a skirting board. The splays are about 25 degrees on long axis, and 30 degrees to one side of the transverse, and 20 degrees to the other side. It is not clear that this is the actual Kingham version, and the distinction between this and the others of this type is blurry; The box of Atlas Tacks found in a roof space at Flagstaff Hill, Warrnambool, may have been left there at the time the buildings were relocated from Middle Island in 1871. (It could equally have been left there later, as the preent Harbourmaster's Cottage hsa Baltic Lining board ceilings, which Dr Yeomans says were not made till 1880.)
