In this way, we seek to promote opportunities for child and youth citizenship.                 <text>The last day of term one was out of the ordinary for students around Victoria.&#13;
&#13;
At Kananook Primary School, in Melbourne's south-east, students were already being kept at home, and the ones that remained were brimming with questions.&#13;
&#13;
Teacher Jemma Bull said the end of term was usually full of excitement and conversations about where kids were going on holiday, but this year there was just confusion.&#13;
&#13;
So she asked her class of 10-year-olds what they wanted to do. They wanted to write letters.&#13;
&#13;
Armed with sharpies and brightly coloured paper, the children began writing messages of thanks to everyone they knew was helping the community get through the coronavirus pandemic.&#13;
&#13;
One student said they wanted to thank the government, another wanted to send a letter to the aged care centre around the corner where her mum worked.&#13;
&#13;
"A lot of them wanted to thank Woolies. Some said thanks for the toilet paper and thanks for stocking your shelves," Ms Bull said.&#13;
&#13;
Many students wanted to thank their parents. Police officers also made the cut.&#13;
&#13;
Ms Bull said letter writing was a way for the children to express their compassion and help them feel more in control.&#13;
&#13;
'They know more than we think'&#13;
One of Ms Bull's students, Willow, had already written several letters to essential workers since the physical-distancing rules were brought in.&#13;
&#13;
Her mum Gerri Pigeot said the nine-year-old was "a little bit obsessed with doctors" and wrote a letter thanking them "for making all the medicines and helping people who need help".&#13;
&#13;
Ms Pigeot said the letters showed Willow was "pretty aware" about what was going on and had found a way to feel like she was doing her part.&#13;
&#13;
"Even before the first day when we heard about the virus she was singing happy birthday when she was washing her hands," she said.&#13;
&#13;
"She said to me, 'Mum, there are old people at risk, we have to wash our hands and sing happy birthday.'&#13;
&#13;
"The kids, they know more than we think."&#13;
&#13;
'Writing letters is a way children can help'&#13;
From teddy bear hunts and rainbows, to chalk messages and letters of thanks, children appear to be taking the initiative when it comes to staying positive during the coronavirus crisis.&#13;
&#13;
Melbourne University educational psychologist Chelsea Hyde said creative projects were a way children took control of their world.&#13;
&#13;
Dr Hyde said adults should follow suit because it was common to feel out of control during the one-in-100-year health crisis.&#13;
&#13;
"We know what's helpful for our mental health is to create opportunities where we think we are helping," Dr Hyde said.&#13;
&#13;
"Letter writing is a way to create points of connection and foster a sense of belonging that isn't reliant on technology.&#13;
&#13;
"It's nice to go back to that. I commend [the children] on their ingenuity."&#13;
&#13;
Researchers have been telling us for years that practicing gratitude boosts our mental health, and now is exactly the time to take that on board, Dr Hyde said.&#13;
&#13;
"It encourages us to reflect on the good things and what we have access to versus the focus on the deficit and the negative and what's going wrong.&#13;
&#13;
"We're very much getting caught up in the changes and trying to create a new normal for ourselves, so adults practicing gratitude is equally important.&#13;
&#13;
"This is a powerless situation for a lot of people and writing letters is a way people, especially children, can help."&#13;
&#13;
Dianne Vella-Brodrick, the head of research at Melbourne University's Centre for Positive Psychology, agreed and said it was important for children to be able to express themselves in a safe and comforting way during difficult times.&#13;
&#13;
"All too often negative events preoccupy us and positive events fade into the background, especially during a crisis," she said.&#13;
&#13;
"Expressing gratitude is an excellent way of identifying and acknowledging some positive qualities and behaviours in others and then taking the time to express these.&#13;

"There is a strong research base supporting the need for people to make their own choices, feel like they are contributing to something important, and to connect meaningfully with others, if they are to maintain psychological wellbeing."&#13;

But any act of gratitude or kindness, she said, needed to be "genuinely meaningful and intrinsically motivated".&#13;
&#13;
"It can be very empowering and rewarding to think of doing something nice for others and then being able to carry it through. It can also be cathartic to be able to express yourself in such a kind, thoughtful way."&#13;

"Intentionally hunting the good stuff and putting aside the bad stuff", at least for a little while, can help us get through.</text>

                <text>My name’s Kitty, I’m in year 7 at Fitzroy high school. I have my own business called Keeping it in the family where I hand make masks and sell them. My whole family helps out. My brother Sam who is in year 9 at Fitzroy is admin and built our website. My Mum helps with sewing, and my Dad helps with a bit of both. I started making masks because my friends in New York said that masks help a lot so to stop the spread of COVID-19 so I hopped on the wagon and started Keeping it in the family. I have made about 115 masks in 1 week and I have sold masks all around Australia, from Sydney to Queensland, and even to New York. I have learnt a lot about running a business already, including persistence, listening to advice, revenue and profit and how to manage finances.&#13;

On Wednesday one of our family friends told us about the weatherman on channel 10 who said that if a small business sends in one of their masks with a bit about their business he might shout them out on the news. So I did! Then the next day he called me and asked me some questions. Then he went on the news and we watched as he told loads of people about my business.                 <text>In November last year, the 1st Vic Sea Scouts organized a community activity to create the longest chalk pavement trail in the world – a 7.5km caterpillar that was designed to be fun and creative for the local kids, get families out walking and reconnecting, and to convey positive messages and messages of thanks to those who had given so much during the year, showing what can be achieved when we work together as a team.&#13;
&#13;
The trail was 7.5 km long and weaved it’s way through Middle Park and Albert park, and gave families and local kids the chance to set out on a journey to find the head and tail, colour in the caterpillar, or write their own personal message.</text>

              <text>PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - When Pikeville High School Biology teacher Kelly Scott formed a team to create a COVID-19 vaccine factsheet, the students she asked were more than happy to lend a hand. So was born the Pikeville High School Healthy Way Project.&#13;
&#13;
Healthy WAY (Wellness in All Youth) is a research training program sponsored by the University of Kentucky Center of Excellence in Rural Health, designed to help high school students address real-world health concerns. Scott decided her students would benefit from creating a project directed at COVID-19 and the available vaccines.&#13;
&#13;
“I think it’s important for young people to also be educated. So, that’s why it’s important for us, at the high school level, to be able to research and educate ourselves as well as others,” said student Kelcie Adams.&#13;
&#13;
The students created a survey to discuss common misconceptions and questions regarding vaccines and the virus. The surveys were then sent to classmates, school staff, and community members.&#13;
&#13;
”If you’re a younger person, you can educate those older than you and then kind of inspire them to know that, like, if these younger kids are knowing all of this, I should find out some things also,” said group member Cassidy Slater.&#13;
&#13;
According to the students, collaborating on the project was easy thanks to Google Classroom and other platforms that helped them stay connected outside of the classroom- which they say was extremely useful during a pandemic. They said they learned a lot about the virus and were shocked to find that many people they surveyed still had questions.&#13;
&#13;
“As much as COVID is in the news, there’s a lot of people that don’t know anything about it,” said Adams.&#13;
&#13;
Group member Sofia Hackney agreed, saying it was an eye-opening experience.&#13;
&#13;
“I was just surprised at how little people actually knew about the virus and the way that it works and the way the vaccine works,” Hackney said.&#13;
&#13;
According to the group, it is all an effort to show people that the pandemic is still a real concern.&#13;
&#13;
“I feel like COVID still isn’t taken as seriously as it should be. And if people have the right information they will take COVID as it should be,” said Christina Al Akhrass.&#13;
&#13;
They hope to use their “A Dose of Hope” informative flyers to make a difference where they can.&#13;
&#13;
“It felt very nice to be able to contribute to something that was greater in our community,” said Hackney.</text>

              <text>Under normal circumstances, families would be able to visit women in the program, but due to COVID-19 restrictions, the campus had to close to visitors, making re-establishing family relationships difficult. High school junior Isabella Campbell has done community service projects with Crossroads before and wanted to find a way to help these women on their journey of community reintegration.&#13;
&#13;
Campbell ordered teddy bears, stuffing, and a heart-shaped recording device where each of the women could record a message, lullaby, or a bedtime story for their child or grandchild. Once those messages were recorded, Campbell picked them up and put them inside a teddy bear along with other goodies to send to the children around Christmas. “I just wanted to create a sense of togetherness because I know it’s hard. I love my parents and couldn’t imagine being away from them,” Campbell said.&#13;
&#13;
Program Coordinator Ashley Lucero said everyone was excited to participate in this project and helped many of the women dealing with isolation during the pandemic. “We’re almost on complete lockdown. We can’t have visitors, they only get telephone calls. For them to be able to send something to their children and their grandchildren where they could hear them every night, read a story to them as if they were there, I thought it was amazing,” Lucero said.&#13;
&#13;
The Pavilions and Maya’s Place, Crossroad’s transitional housing community in Bernalillo County, offers safe, structured living for women emerging from incarceration. Clients receive wrap-around services, including case management, family support, vocational services, and groups focused on recovery and mental health.</text>
