Cover with autog. title: A# (centre) No. 4 (non-autogr.) | Capricio à 2 Violin: | 2 Oboi, 2 Corn: di Caccia, | Fagotto e Contra= | =basso. | à Vien: 20 Ottobre | 1718 | Violin: 2: | Hautbois 2. | Corn: di Caccia. 2. | Fagotto. | Contr Basso (lower left) di Giovanni | Disma Zelenka | Musico di Camara | de S. M. Polaka. | et Ellettore di Sassonia.
Set of eight parts in wrapper with label to correspond with new location when Zelenka’s instrumental works were taken to Schrank II: Schranck No. II | Lit. 28. Fach 8. Lage | No. 4.) Caprice | co’ WWni Oboi, Corni: Viola e Basso | 9 St. | del Sigr Zelencka | Incipit.
Parts: Violino Pmo ; Violino 2do (Zelenka wrote the Menuet 2, Paysane 1, 2); Contra=Basso (part-autogr. Zelenka wrote the Menuets I, 2, Andante, Paysans 1, 2); Hautbois Pma; Hautbois 2 (Zelenka wrote Menuet 2); Fagotto o’ Violoncello; Corn’ Pmo; Corn 2do.
In August 1718, an ensemble of eleven Dresden musicians was ordered to the imperial capital to accompany the prince during this period of courtship. They were concertmaster Jean Baptiste Volumier, Pantaleon Hebenstreit, the pantaleon virtuoso and violinist, lutenist Silvius Leopold Weiss, premier violinist Johann Georg Pisendel, violoncellist Agostino Rossi, premier oboist Johann Christian Richter, flautist Pierre Gabriel Buffardin, second violinist Carl Joseph Rhein, second oboist Johann Martin Blochwitz, viola (‘Violetta’) player Johann Georg Lehneiß, and bassonist Johann Gottfried Böhme. (D-Dla, 10026 Geh. Kab. Loc. 383/4, ‘Die Bande Französischer Comoedianten und Orchestre betr. Ao 1703, 1708–12, 1714-20’, fols. 222a–b). Zelenka must have joined his colleagues as the string bass player and it is likely that these musicians, plus the two young horn players attached to the court of the electoral prince, Tobias Butz and Johann Joseph Goetzel who were in Vienna at this time (see Herbert Seifert, ‘Zelenka in Wien’, 187, n. 30) first performed this Capriccio in A (ZWV 185) dated ‘à Vien: 20 Ottobre/ 1718’.
Unlisted in the ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’ (c1784) due to relocation to Schrank II.
