Part of the original wrapper/cover with autogr. title is kept with the score: I penitenti al Sepulchro | del redentore. | Oratorio | de G. D. Zelenka.
Dedication and date (concl. score): A M D G B M V OO SS H AA P I R 1736 29 Marzo.
In the Catalogo of August III (Bibl. Arch. III Hb 787g, I Penitenti al Sepolcro del Redentore in quarto is listed under ‘Libretti di Poesia’ (p. 115).
Reports are given almost annually in the Diarium and in the annual letters of music being sung at the Holy Sepulchre erected in Dresden’s royal chapel during Holy Week. Beginning in 1718 the apparatus itself (and the music that came to be performed there) increased in magnificence, and from 1718, at the order of August II, the Holy Sepulchre was guarded by the Noble Praetorian Guard. Reported in Annuae Domûs Professae Societatis IESU Pragae ad S. Nicolaum Anni 1718: Missio Dresdensis, ARSI (I-Rar), Boh 132, 11.
On 30 March 1736 (Good Friday) the Diarium of the Dresden Jesuits reported that at 8 pm a very elegant new oratorio composed by Zelenka titled I Penitenti al Sepolchro was heard, and for this, candles were placed in the choir. (‘... hora 8 oratorium, quod novum composuit D. Zelenka: I Penitenti al Sepolchro, prorsus elegans, dantur pro hoc candelae ad chorum’). This oratorio might have been performed again in 1739, when the Diarium reported that Zelenka produced the oratorios heard on Good Friday (27.3.) and on Holy Saturday (28.3.).
The libretto is listed in the incomplete catalogue of Maria Josepha as ‘Il Penitenti al Sepolcro del Redentore. 2 volte.’ (p. 27, recent pagination).
In the ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’ (c1784) score and parts are listed under Oratoria No: 1) I Penitenti ad Sepulchro (III/Z/21/20). See Zelenka-Dokumentation, 144, Dok. 66. On Zelenka’s oratorios see Susanne Oschmann, Zelenka: Seine geistlichen italienischen.
