Remarks

Two (perhaps even three) versions of Zelenka’s setting of psalm 129 existed in Dresden. One score is held. All parts are missing.
The original setting was composed in 1724 for the Requiem Vespers held in the Dresden Catholic court church following the death of Zelenka’s father. On 3.3.1724 the Diarium Missionis reported: ‘Hora 10. cantatum Requiem pro parente Domini Zelenka, quod ipse composuit et cum Regiis Musicis produxit’. The scoring given in the Inventarium (52/10) for the original setting which is listed under ‘Pro Defunctus’ is: ‘à 6, C.A.T.B3, Violi: 2, oboe 2, Vl 2 e Basso Continuo.’
Late in 1725 Zelenka revised the original setting for use in Vespers of the octave of the Nativity, adding a setting of the doxology with the required text for Vespers within this Christmas octave. In his Inventarium (32/17) Zelenka gave the scoring for this version as ‘à 4 C.A.T.Bassi 3, Violin 2, Oboe 2, Viole 2, e Basso Contin:’ that is, without trombones. The scoring of the version listed as Nr. 17 of his ‘33 Psalmi insieme’ in the catalogue of c1784 (III/Z/19/3 Nr. 17), is for ‘4. voci co’ VVni Viola ed Org.’
The score and parts listed for a version of De profundis both here (III/Z/23/8) and in the Catalogo c1784 (III/Z/21/8) give the scoring as ‘à 4 voci, co’ VVni Viola, 3. Tromboni ed Org.’ – that is, without three bass singers.
