Remarks

Autogr. score with blue-grey cover.
Cover title (autogr.): Mottetto per il | Natale del | N: S: J: | a 4 Flau: | Viol. 2 | Viola 1 | Tenore | e Organo | di Giov: D: | Zelenka.
The recitative of this motet was originally set as ‘Proh! quae aëris inclementia’, No. 23 from Zelenka’s Melodrama of 1723 (see III/Z/25/5 in this catalogue), followed by the aria ‘Auster lux perennis’.
See Zelenka-Dokumentation, 114, Dok. 17 and 304, ZWV 172. Pairs and flutes and recorders (oboists often doubled on the recorder) provide the pastoral effect required for a work to be performed on Christmas Eve. See also Th. Kohlhase, ‘Zelenkas geistliche Parodien’, 419–34.
I have suggested that in this aria of the Melodrama Zelenka made a musical reference to a phrase from Fux’s opera of 1716: Orfeo ed Euridice. See Stockigt, Jan Dismas Zelenka, 128, and Ex. 4.12.
In the later ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’ (c1784) score and parts are listed under 5 Motetti: No: 4) Pro Nativitate Domini. Pro quos criminis (III/Z/13/18). The scoring given is ‘à Tenore Solo co’VVni, Vla, Ob: 4 Fl: ed Org.’
A listing in the non-thematic music catalogue of the Cistercian monastery at Osek (Northern Bohemia) might refer to this work. f. 26b, [Gradualia] de festis Solemnionibus … [ab A: 1723]: ‘Motteto per il Natale. T. solo il Concert: Zelencka’ (ZWV 172?).
