The score of this movement (Mus. 2358–D-34a) is the revised version of the Gloria from Zelenka’s Missa Judica me et discerne causum meam (ZWV 2; Mus. 2358–D-34,1,1), 1714. This version (Mus. 2358-D-34a) is dated 2 February 1724, feast of the Purification BVM. On that day, the Dresden Jesuit Diarium entry noted: ‘Habui Cantatum, quod solennius cum Regiis Musicis fecit D. Zelenka’. ([...] Sung Mass to which Zelenka and the royal musicians gave lustre). Originally, Zelenka retained the alto and tenor violas and trombones in the scoring, but later wrote into the margin (p. 3) ‘senza tromboni’. See also his Credo setting also dated 2.2.1724 (Mus. 2358-D-30): III/Z/12/2.
In the later, ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’ (c1784) two scores and one set of parts for the Gloria are listed as [Messa:] No: 16 (III/Z/11/3). NB: Although two scores of this Gloria are shown in the Catalogo of c1784, only one copy is listed this Catalogo of 1765.
Mus. 2358-D-34,1,1: The original version of the Gloria from Missa Judica me et discerne causum meam. Zelenka has the year of composition of this Gloria on the title page to the score in a chronogram embedded in the string of his Latin names: Ioannes LVCas IgnatIVs DIsMas ZeLenka. = I+L+V+C+I+I+V+D+I+M+L = 1+50+5+100+1+1+5+500+1+1000+50: 1714. Note that in 1714 Zelenka used his baptismal name, ‘Lucas’ together with ‘Dismas’ and ‘Ignatius’. Zelenka’s usual dedication formula does not appear in the version of 1714.
See Zelenka-Dokumentation, 115–6, Dok. 23; 289, ZWV 30.
Concordances:
1. CZ-Pak, 1398: Set of 14 performance parts (Kohlhase notes that these were written in the second third of the 18th century: ‘Der Dresdener Hofkirchenkomponist’, 139). Štefan ([1463] Sign. 1398), prov. Sehling. The title is ‘Gloria solenne Divinae praesentiae’. RISM ID no. 550268659. Jana Vojtéšková (Die Zelenka-Überlieferung), considers it probable that Sehling received the copies of this work from the Cistercian monastery at Osek in Northen Bohemia.
2. CZ-Pu (National Archive, Prague), Loreto box ŘK 259–262. A set of parts from the collection of the Loreto in Prague (prov. Taubner). Cover: Jesus Maria Joseph| Gloria in Excelsis | S. Polycarpi Epis. & Martyris | à 4 Vocibus. | Canto, Alto, | Tenore, Basso. | Hubois 2. | Alto Viola. | Tenore Viola | con | Organo. | Pro S: Domo Lauretanae | Sub Num: | 44. I am grateful to Robert Hugo for bringing this source to my attention. This source appears to be a slightly altered version of the Gloria (1714 version: Zelenka’s instrumental introduction of 25 bars in Mus. 2358-D-34a is missing from this Loreto copy).
