Remarks

Manuscript score copies of 14 Sanctus and Agnus settings by Palestrina.
This volume comes from Zelenka, whose hand is seen in the numbering of each Sanctus et Agnus setting.
Caption titles to these settings are: Missa Prima à 4 (left); N. 1 (right); Missa Secunda (left); N. 2 (right); N. 3. Missa tertia (left); N. 4. Missa Quarta; N: 5.; N: 6. â 5. (includes a Canon in sub Diapente); N: 7 Missa Spem in alium (left); N. 8 (right: this setting includes an Agnus Secundus/ Canon in sub diapason) Missa primi Toni, sopra’ J[?]o mi son Giovanetta (left); N. 9 (right; this setting includes at the Agnus Secundus a Canon in Diapason et in Diapente); N: 10 Missa brevis (this setting includes at the Agnus Secundus a Canon Symphoni ?Zabis:); N: 11. Missa de Feria; Missa L’homme arme â 5 (left); N: 12 (right); N: 13 Missa Repleatur os meum Plaude (or Laude?); N: 14.
Between Nr. 13 and Nr. 14 is slip of paper is kept upon which Zelenka wrote: Imo N: 6/ Tom 1 (ie, vol. 1 of Zelenka’s Collectaneorum Musicoru[m], four volumes of music assembled during his sojourn in Vienna. See III/37/2).
See my Remarks under Caldara’s, Missa vix orimur, morimur (I/C/6/8).
This collection has led to my suggestion that a solemn Kyrie–Gloria (and Credo if the occasion was a high feast of importance) performed by members of the Dresden Hofkapelle in the Hofkirche might conclude with ‘Ordinary’ or a cappella Sanctus and Agnus settings sung either by the royal musicians or, more likely, by the Kapellknaben (with instrumental doubling). See ‘Bach’s Missa BWV 232/I’, 42.
Stockigt, ‘Musica senza nome’, 29 (27.15).
In the Catalogo (c1784) a score only is shown for the Sanctus (G Major) and Agnus (B flat Major?) listed under Musica senza Nome dell’Autore (III/24/15). There, the scoring is given as: ‘à 4 voci à Capella.’ Incipits for the first Sanctus and Agnus. A remark below the title of the Agnus reads: 14. volte in un libro.
