The commission for Ristori to write this opera on Metastasio’s text came from the Marquis de Salas, Neapolitan Prime Minister. This opera was to celebrate the name-day of the father of Charles VII, King of the Two Sicilies (and son-in-law of August III): Philip V, King of Spain (19 December). See Ágústsson, ‘Giovanni Alberto Ristori at the Court of Naples 1738–1740’ (69–70).
‘The copyist “Ristori A” not only wrote settings of Salve Regina by Giuseppe de Majo (D Dl, Mus. 2475-D-1) and Giovanni Gualberto Brunetti (D Dl, Mus. 4387-E-1), but also the first acts of Ristori’s Temistocle and Porpora’s Semiramide riconosciuta (D Dl, Mus. 2455-F-6.1 and D Dl, Mus. 2417-F-2). Not surprisingly, the copyist “Ristori B” wrote the second acts of Ristori’s Temistocle and Porpora’s Semiramide riconosciuta, as well as Leo’s Miserere (D Dl, Mus. 2460-D-7a) and Kyrie e Gloria in G major (D Dl, Mus. 2460-D-1), and Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater (D Dl, Mus. 3005-D-1b)’.
