‘The G. B. Pescetti score (Mus. 2967?-D-1, 1-2) is [...] from Baldan's copisteria. More precisely, the Kyrie and Credo in the first, small-format volume are from Baldan, and so, too, is the Gloria that is the sole occupant of the larger-format second volume. But the section with the Sanctus and Agnus Dei at the end of the first volume is visibly a composition autograph - thus in Pescetti's own hand. The title-page before the Kyrie describes the Mass as ‘Messa nuova concertata a quattro voci’. It is possible that in its original form, for Venetian use, the Mass was a Kyrie-Gloria-Credo ‘threesome’, but was extended to become a ‘Missa tota’ on request from Baldan (or from Dresden). Perhaps there was not time for Baldan to make a copy of the newly added final sections before dispatch to Dresden, which is why they remained in the composer's rather messy hand. This is a fine work well worth revival’. (e-mail from Michael Talbot. 10.12.2003).
