On the reverse of the front cover of each volume titled ‘Lully Trio Basse’ (Mus. 1827-F-27,1; -F-27,2) Zelenka wrote: ‘A Zelenka Music: de S. Maieste le Roy de Pologne et Eletori de Saxe 1716 a Vienne.’
1690 (Mus. 1827-F-27,1) or 1691 (Mus. 1827-F-27,2). Ded. Monseigneur Philibert de la Tour.
Jóhannes Ágústsson (‘The Secular Vocal Collection of Jan Dismas Zelenka’, 42) notes that in his Élements ou Principes de musique of 1696 (41) Étienne Loulié pointed to the pedagogical value of Lully’s Trios to assist the novice with the phrasing of French instrumental music. Perhaps Zelenka purchased this copy not only to have French repertoire at hand (as I have previously noted), but also as the means of acquiring instruction in the good taste [‘bon goust’] of the French performance style – part of the purpose of educational travel Zelenka requested in his petition to August II with the dedication of Missa Sanctae Caeciliae (ZWV 1), 1712. (The petition is given by Stockigt, Jan Dismas Zelenka, 36 (English translation); 307–08 (original German).
