Thus, this source confirms that by mid 1716 Zelenka was in Vienna. It is unlikely that he travelled to Venice in that year, even though in 1715 funds were made available for Pisendel, Johann Christian Richter, Christian Petzold, and Zelenka to undertake this journey. According to an article on Dresden court oboist Johann Christian Richter, both he and the Dresden court violinist Johann Georg Pisendel were the only Dresden musicians known to have entered quarantine before travelling to Venice in March 1716. See Samantha Owens, 'Richter, Johann Christian,' in the Lexikon der Holzblasinstrumente, 608–609.
No dedication.
Concl. of score: Dresda | 17 Maii 1731.
NB: To his listing of this work in the Inventarium, Zelenka added: ‘de SS: Trinitate’.
Although listed in the Catalogo (1765) as a soprano solo, originally this work was composed for tenor – subsequently altered from tenor to soprano, probably for one of the two male soprano castrati of the Hofkapelle: Ventura Rochetti (‘Venturini’) or Giovanni Bindi. A similar re-scoring by Zelenka for soprano of a work originally set for solo tenor occurred with the psalm setting Laudate pueri (D-Dl, Mus. 2358-D-67; ZWV 81).
Jóhannes Ágústsson, in ‘The Secular Vocal Collection of Jan Dismas Zelenka’ (19–20), suggests that this was sung as a ‘debut’ work written by Zelenka for the tenor Johann Joseph Götzel who only recently had entered the Dresden Hofkapelle. Together with Tobias Butz (Putz) Johann Joseph Götzel had previously been engaged as a horn player in the personal Hoffstadt of Saxon Electoral Prince Friedrich August II (later August III) and Maria Josepha. See Ágústsson and Stockigt, ‘The Eestablishment ofthe Catholic Cemetery in Dresden’, 42,45, 57.
Zelenka-Dokumentation, 143, Dok. 57; 304, ZWV 268.
In the later ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’ (c1784) score and parts are listed under 5 Motetti: No: 1) Gaude laetare (III/Z/13/15). NB: There, the scoring given is: ‘à Tenore Solo co’VVni, Oboi, Vla ed Org.’</text>

Caption title: Motetto pro Nativitate.
Mus. 2358-E-501a: Set of 16 parts with two grey-blue wrappers. The outer wrapper has a label to correspond with the Hofkirche Catalogo (c1784): Schranck No. III | Lit. Z. 13. Fach 16. Lage | No. 2) Motetto | Pro Nativitate Domini | O Magnum Mysterium | à Contr’alto Solo | co’ VVni Viola Flauti ed Org. | Partitura e parti | del Sigr Zelencka | Incipit
Cover title (autogr.): No 1 (upper left) L:J:C: No. 2 (upper right; non- autogr.) | Mottetto à Contralto Solo | Violini | Flauti Traversi 2 | Viola | e | Basso Continuo | di | G:D:Z.
Parts (these have been re-paginated and reflect more than two occasions of performance): Alto solo; Violino I x 3; Violino 2 x 3; Violetta x 2; Traversa 2 x 2; Flauto a bec x 2; Violone R e Fagotto (‘e Fagotto’ in Zelenka’s hand); Violoncello o Fagotto (‘o Fagotto’ in Zelenka’s hand); Organo. Scribes are Zelenka, ZS 1, ZS 2 (from 1730), Johann Georg Kremmler (from 1733), and one identified by RISM as S-Dl-040.
The aria ‘Dormi nate, dormi Deus’ was originally No. 29, ‘Reviresce, effloresce pacis’ from Zelenka’s Melodrama composed for Prague, 1723 (see III/Z/25/5 in this catalogue).
In the revision of that aria as a motet, parts in Zelenka’s hand for two flutes—as well as their inclusion in the instrumentation given on the cover to the parts—suggest that the first working occurred after the return to Dresden of Johann Joachim Quantz as second flautist to Buffardin. The later addition of two somewhat simplified parts for recorders might be an addition, or an alternative to a pair of flutes. The use of flutes and/or recorders (these would have been played either by oboists of the Hofkapelle, or by Kapellknaben: the four ‘Flauten’ that Fürstenau [II, 37] notes that were purchased in 1709 for the Catholic court church were probably recorders) provide the pastoral effect required for a work performed in the Catholic court church on Christmas Eve.
Purple pencil markings in both score and parts suggest a much later use of this motet for Christmas Eve in the Dresden Hofkirche.
See Zelenka-Dokumentation, 114, Dok. 17; 304, ZWV 171.
See Kohlhase, ‘Zelenkas geistliche Parodien’, 419–34.
In the later, undated ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’ (c1784) score and parts are listed under 5 Motetti: No: 2) Pro Nativitate Domini. O Magnum mÿsterium (III/Z/13/16). There, the scoring given is: ‘à Contralto Solo co’VVni, Vla, Fl: ed Org.’
A listing in the non-thematic music catalogue of the Cistercian monastery at Osek (Northern Bohemia) might refer to this work: f. 26b: [Gradualia] de festis Solemnionibus … [ab A: 1723]: ‘Aria per il Natale de N: J: S: à Contralto. Zelenka’ (?ZWV 171?).</text>

Dedication: (very faint at conclusion): L: G: C:
See Freemanová & Stockigt, ‘Jan Dismas Zelenka and a Prague performance of San’t Elena al Calvario by Leonardo Leo’, where it is suggested that the first aria of the motet of three movements, ‘Barbara dira effera’, and the motet ‘Sollicitus fossor’ (ZWV 209) were inserted into Leo’s oratorio (‘San’t Elena al Calvario’) for a performance given at the Clementinum College Prague, 1734. It is also suggested that at a later time Zelenka added a recitative and final Allelulia aria to the aria Barbara dira effera for a performance in Dresden (possibly following the move to the Dresden Hofkapelle from Prague of the bassoonist Anton Möser, a one-time member of the Prague orchestra of Count Wenzel Morzin). See also the listing of ‘Sollicitus fossor’ (Mus. 2358-E-38): III/28/5.
NB: This score has the same watermark (pp. 33–4; 41-2) as those seen ‘Sollicitus fossor’ and ‘Qui nihil sortis’ (III/28/4)—both works by Zelenka but listed as anonymous compositions in the MUSICA SENZA NOME DELL'AUTORE section of the catalogues of 1765 and c1784.
Zelenka-Dokumentation, 303, ZWV 164.
In the later ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’ (c1784) score and parts are listed under 5 Motetti: No: 3) Pro Resurrectionis Domini. Barbara dira (III/Z/13/17). There, the scoring given is: ‘à Contralto Solo co’VVni, Vla, Fag: concert: ed Org.’</text>

Cover title (autogr.): Mottetto per il | Natale del | N: S: J: | a 4 Flau: | Viol. 2 | Viola 1 | Tenore | e Organo | di Giov: D: | Zelenka.
The recitative of this motet was originally set as ‘Proh! quae aëris inclementia’, No. 23 from Zelenka’s Melodrama of 1723 (see III/Z/25/5 in this catalogue), followed by the aria ‘Auster lux perennis’.
See Zelenka-Dokumentation, 114, Dok. 17 and 304, ZWV 172. Pairs and flutes and recorders (oboists often doubled on the recorder) provide the pastoral effect required for a work to be performed on Christmas Eve. See also Th. Kohlhase, ‘Zelenkas geistliche Parodien’, 419–34.
I have suggested that in this aria of the Melodrama Zelenka made a musical reference to a phrase from Fux’s opera of 1716: Orfeo ed Euridice. See Stockigt, Jan Dismas Zelenka, 128, and Ex. 4.12.
In the later ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’ (c1784) score and parts are listed under 5 Motetti: No: 4) Pro Nativitate Domini. Pro quos criminis (III/Z/13/18). The scoring given is ‘à Tenore Solo co’VVni, Vla, Ob: 4 Fl: ed Org.’
A listing in the non-thematic music catalogue of the Cistercian monastery at Osek (Northern Bohemia) might refer to this work. f. 26b, [Gradualia] de festis Solemnionibus … [ab A: 1723]: ‘Motteto per il Natale. T. solo il Concert: Zelencka’ (ZWV 172?).</text>

The text is taken from the Czech translation of Psalm 150 as published in the Protestant Kralická Bible, which Jaroslav Smolka (Prague, 1990) reported as being banned in Bohemia at that time. ‘De tempore’ means that the work might be performed at any time of the Temporal Cycle of the church calendar.
Ferdinand Tadra (1844–1910), historian and organizing member of the Prague choral society Hlahol, was probably responsible for arranging the loan from Dresden of Zelenka’s autograph of Chvalte boha silného, which was performed in Prague in 1895.
See Jana Vojtéšková, ‘Die Zelenka-Überlieferung’, 97. Also Zelenka-Dokumentation, 303, ZWV 166.
<text>Zelenka’s Inventarium entry of this work reads: ‘NB: Fuit hoc Requiem factum et productum pro Anniversario Invictiss. Imper. Josephi ad Mandatum Serenissimae Nostrae Principessae’, indicating that the work was commissioned by Maria Josepha before she received the title ‘Queen’ (coronation January 1734). On 17 April 1731, the 20th anniversary of the death of Joseph I, the Dresden Diarium Missionis reported that a Requiem for Emperor Joseph had been produced by Zelenka: ‘Requiem pro Caesare Josepho produxit D. Zelenka.’ The entry of 22 April 1732 recorded that at 11 am a Requiem for Emperor Joseph with music by Zelenka: “ora 11. Requiem pro Imperatore Josepho ... Musicam fecit D. Zelenka.’ In 1739, 1740, and 1741 a Requiem is reported on the anniversaries of the death of Joseph I without mention of the music until 1741, when Hasse was responsible: ‘Anniversarium pro Imperatore Josepho I. Hora 11. Cantatum Requiem ((…….)) D. Hasse.’
In the later ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’ (c1784) score and parts are listed under Missae pro Defunctis: No: 2) Requiem; Dies irae; Offertorium; Sanctus; Agnus (III/Z/14/2). The scoring of the Requiem is given is: ‘à 4 voci co’VVni, Vla, Oboi, Flauti, Chalmeaux ed Org.’; scoring for the Dies irae is given as: ‘à 4 voci co’VVni, Viola, Oboi ed Org.’; scoring of the Offertorium is: ‘à 4 voci co’VVni, Viola, Oboi, ed Org.’; scoring of the Sanctus is: ‘à 4 voci co’VVni, Viola, Oboi ed Org.’; scoring of the Agnus is: ‘à 4 voci co’VVni, Oboi, Viola, ed Org.’
Ferdinand Tadra (1844–1910), historian and organizer of the Prague choral society Hlahol, was probably responsible for arranging the loan from Dresden of Zelenka’s autograph of this d-minor Requiem (ZWV 48). See Kohlhase, ‘Der Dresdener Hofkirchenkomponist’, 177.
The only known 18th c. example of sections from this Requiem (ZWV 48) survives at Bratislava (formerly from the Piarist monastery at Podolínec) as an incomplete set of parts prepared in 1770.
Zelenka-Dokumentation, Dok.59a, 2) 135; 291, ZWV 48.
Concordances:
1. CZ-Prague, Hlahol archive, Sign. 1847. Score copy (1878)
2. SK-J, H-252. Incomplete set of parts (1770). RISM ID no. 570001803. (The ‘Christe eleison’ and ‘Benedictus’ settings differ from the example held by Hlahol).</text>

Zelenka listed this into the Inventarium as ‘Te Deu[m] à 2 Cori: NB in P[rimo] Choro sunt 2 C[anto]’. The two choruses comprise SSATB soli (two soprano soloists with equal ranges and vocal abilities are required for the aria ‘Tu Rex gloriae’, while ‘Per singulos dies’ is set as a solo trio for two sopranos and alto), and SATB (ripieno) chorus.
Perhaps Zelenka’s Te Deum setting of 1731 (ZWV 146) was performed in the Hofkirche in the presence of the crown prince in November 1731 when a Thanksgiving was held following the successful birth of Saxon Princess Maria Josepha (4 November). (‘pro quo continuò in Ecclesia presente Serenissimo Principe Regio Solenne Te Deum laudamus decantavimus’). Annuae Literae Regiae Missionis Dresdensis pro anno 1731, ARSI (I-Rar), Boh 148,22. The HStCal reported that in the castle/court church during the morning sermon, public thanks were given and the Te Deum laudamus was played with trumpets and timpani. (HStCal, 1733).
It is probable that this setting also was performed at the St Petri Dom during the Erbhuldigung ceremonies held in Bautzen for Elector Friedrich August I, May 1733. Documentation of this event shows that Zelenka, who also sang as a tenor in the performance, went with Pisendel in advance to negotiate performing space in St Petri for the thirty musicians of the Hofkapelle (twenty-one instrumentalists and nine singers, plus servant) who travelled to Bautzen for this occasion. See Stockigt, ‘The visit of members of the Dresden Hofkapelle to Bautzen: May 1733’, in Understanding Bach, 9, 89–92© Bach Network UK 2014. Also Stockigt & Ágústsson, ‘Well-born and virtuoso Kapellmeister’: Visits of Jan Dismas Zelenka and the Dresden Hofkapelle to Bautzen, 1733’, Clavibus unitis 5 (2016), 1–12.
On Dresden performance practice of the Ambrosian Hymn, see Th. Kohlhase’s preface to his edition Jan Dismas Zelenka: Te Deum in D (ZWV 145: Carus-Verlag, 1984). Also Zelenka-Dokumentation, 134, Dok. 58; 301, ZWV 146.
In the later ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’ (c1784) score and parts are listed under the heading Te Deum laudamus No. 2) (III/Z/15/2). The scoring is given as: ‘à 4 voci co’VVni, Vla. Oboi, Trombe, Timpani ed Org.’</text>

Parts are missing except for one violin part for Nr. 2 in Zelenka’s hand. (This part demonstrates the manner in which a Dresden violinist would play a bass line. In the score of No 2 ‘Violini e Viola’ is written at the beginning of the bass /organ stave).
On the upper right of page 1 (in Schürer’s hand?) is written storage information which relates to this Catalogo (1765): Schranck N. 3 | Z. 16 Fach 10. Lage | 6 Ave Regina | parti cav:
Dedication and date at concl. score: A M D G B V M OO SS H AA P I R 1737.
See Zelenka-Dokumentation, 299–300, ZWV 128.
In the later ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’ score and parts for each of the six settings are listed under the heading 6 Ave Regina. [Nos. 1–6] (III/Z/16/1). Each setting is listed with its incipit given. The scoring for each is ‘à 4 voci co’VVni, Vla ed Org.’
NB: An incorrect G clef (instead of soprano clef) has been used for the incipit both here (above) and in the Catalogo (c1784).
On these settings, see Frederic Kiernan, ‘Six Ave regina coelorum settings (1737) by Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679–1745): Context and Critical Edition.’ MMus Diss., The University of Melbourne, 2013. Published by A-R Editions, 2018.</text>
