Title on wrapper: No: 1 | Messa ex A dur | a 4. voci | Corbisiero (pencil]) del Sigr. Corbisiero.
Parts (8 vocal; 11 instrumental) : *Organo (cover: ‘No 1) | Organo/ Kyrie e Gloria à quattro Voci con | Violini Oboè e Corni da Caccia | Del Sigr D. Franco Corbisiero; *Canto Primo [insert for Canto Solo of Laudamus te and Quoniam settings]; Canto Primo Ripieno; *Alto Primo [insert for Alto Solo of Domine Deus]; Alto Primo Ripieno; *Tenore Primo; Tenore Primo Ripieno; *Basso Primo; Basso Primo Ripieno; *Violino Primo ; Violino Primo ; *Violino Secondo; Violino Secondo; *Oboè Primo; *Oboè Secondo; *Tromba Prima ‘Del Sigr D. Franco Corbisiero’ ; *Tromba Seconda; Organo; Violon celli.
NB: Parts marked with an asterisk* probably comprise the original set.
Although the Dresden example is attributed to Francesco Corbisiero (see parts for Organo, and Tromba Prima), this work is probably by the older brother, Antonio. The backgrounds of both Francesco and Antonio Corbisiero place them in the circle of Neapolitan composers represented in the Catalogo of 1765. Hanns-Bertold Dietz (‘Corbisiero, Antonio’and ‘Corbisiero, Francesco’, Oxford Music Online) points out that there are wrong attributions to the output of sacred music of these two composers.</text>

He also wrote ‘long:’ in the column in which the tonality is specified.
Zelenka’s alterations to the score are minimal. The Dresden source has a viola part, but there are no orchestration instructions to imply the addition of oboes. One marking of ‘Solo’ and the tempo indication ‘Andante’ are possibly in the hand of Zelenka.
According to Eitner, two score copies were held in Dresden.
The attribution of this setting to Carlo Cozzi, who flourished until the mid 17th century, is almost certainly faulty. (Note the musical attributes of the incipit). On stylistic grounds Horn (Hkm, 132) also questions whether this setting is by a composer of earlier times whose only known published compositions demonstrate the conservative double-choir idiom.
An example of a Beatus vir setting attributed to Cozzi exists in Prague: CZ-Pak, 296. Štefan ([309] Sign. 296), prov. Sehling. However, the incipit provided by Štefan does not agree with the incipit in this Catalogo (1765). Instead, it agrees with a Beatus vir setting attributed to Antonio Negri, father of contralto Maria Catterina Negri. (Antonio accompanied his daughter to Prague in the 1720s when she was employed to sing in Count Sporck’s operatic venture). Antonio Negri’s Beatus vir was included in Zelenka’s collection and entered into this Catalogo (1765). See II/N/6/2 (Mus. 2883-D-2). RISM ID no. 550269659.
On this setting see Stockigt, ‘The Vespers Psalms of Jan Dismas Zelenka’, App. 2, No. 7.
Incipit given in Zelenka-Dokumentation, 54, Nr. 86. Horn (Die wichtigsten Schreiber, 164) identifies the copyist of Mus. 1487-E-1 as ZS O.</text>

<text>Sacred works listed in 18th century Bohemian catalogues are attributed to ‘Wen: Czervenka’ (Osek 1720+) and ‘D. Cžerwenka Anno 1720’, Cžervenka, and Czervenka (Catalogue of the Piarist college, Kosmonosích). Dlabač (Allgemeines historisches Künstler-Lexikon, 311) has five entries of musicians with the family name Czerwenka, each from the latter half of the 18th century.
This now-missing work is likely to be one of a group of five relatively short settings of the Litany of Loreto by Bohemian composers that were entered into this Catalogo (1765). Although each work comes from Zelenka’s music collection, none is listed into his Inventarium. These settings might have been acquired for use in the Dresden Catholic court church following the expansion in 1727 of the Kapellknaben ensemble, and of Marian devotions. In that year the annual letter to Rome reported: ‘At the beginning of the school year the number of young musicians was increased in order to amplify Marian devotions, and all Saturdays and also ferial days preceding Marian feasts will be celebrated with litanies [...].’ Annuae Litterae Missionis Dresdensis ad annum 1727, ARSI (I-Rar), Boh 143, 19.
Besides Czerwenka, the composers of similar Litanies of Loreto (all provenance of Zelenka) are Gerbich (Görbig), the Cistercian Grünberger (OC), Muck, and Schütze. Each composer is also represented with compositions listed into the Osek music catalogues. In some copies of these litanies the scribe gives a phonetic spelling or an interpretation of the written name of the composer: Korbischi = Görbig or Gerbich; Krusberger = Grünberger; Muk = Muck.</text>

Cover title (hand of Zelenka) on blue-grey wrapper: a (upper left) Nro 28 (upper right) | Missa Mundata est lepra ejus. Math. 8 v.1 | à 4 | C: A: T: B: | Violin 2 | Viola | Basso Conti: | del | S: Caldara. Zelenka’s additional notation on the score copy made by ZS 0 (Horn: Die wichtigsten Schreiber, 172), suggest that he worked on this mass before early 1729. At the conclusion of the score is written a partly readable note: 1 thlr (= 1 thaler); 15 grn (= 15 groschen).
NB: Zelenka’s accompanying note ‘P’.
The text reference of Zelenka’s copy of Caldara’s Missa Mundata est lepra ejus is from the gospel of Matthew 8, verses 1–3: (When he came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, ‘Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.’ Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. ‘I am willing,’ he said. ‘Be clean!’ Immediately he was cured of his leprosy).
A margin note with the entry in the Inventarium reads: Caldara si verum est.
On Caldara sources held by SLUB see Horn (Hkm, 160–66).
Concordance? CZ-MEa Sign. 38. The incipits given in Zelenka-Dokumentation, 51, Nr. 68. match those of an example of this mass from Mělník.</text>

Cover title page [Zelenka]: No 10 [upper right] replaced with No. 5 (the number assigned in the Catalogo, 1765) | Missa Providentiae| à 4 | C: A: T: B: | Violin 2 | Viola e | Basso Continuo | del| S: Antonio Cal= | dara.
Except for occasional additions of instrumentation and instructions of dynamics added by Zelenka, the score is not in his hand. The Credo, however, was composed by Zelenka (ZWV 31). On p. 72 he wrote: Segue il Credo | in Unu[m] Deum | di G: D: Zelenka.
Another copy of this Kyrie e Gloria once was held in the Hofkapelle collection. See the listing of a Kyrie and Gloria under MUSICA SENZA NOME DELL’AUTORE, III/27/5. (I was unable to locate this example in SLUB). It probably was the source acquired by Zelenka and used as the basis of this present score (Mus. 2170-D-7).
In circa 1727 Zelenka acquired six mass settings by Italian and Imperial composers. He entered these into his Inventarium immediately after listings of masses he composed in 1726 (No. 7: Missa Paschalis ZWV 7; No. 8: Missa Nativitatis Domini ZWV 8) and c1727 (No. 9: Missa Corporis Domini[ci]). Immediately following the listings of these six masses Zelenka entered his own Missa Charitatis ZWV 10, also from circa 1727.
This group of six masses was entered into the Inventarium (p. 5) as
No. 10, Antonio Caldara, Missa Providentiae (D-Dl, Mus 2170-D-7);
No. 11, Francesco Durante, Missa Modestiae (D-Dl, Mus. 2397-D–10);
No. 12, Francesco Mancini, Missa Temperantiae (D-Dl, Mus. 2203-D–2);
No. 13, Alessandro Scarlatti, Missa Magnanimitatis (now missing);
No. 14 (p. 6), Johann Joseph Fux, Missa Fiduciae (D-Dl, Mus. 2130-D-1), and
No. 15, Johann Georg Reinhard, Missa Vita hominis brevis est (D-Dl, Mus. 2793-D-2).
Each mass was ‘stretched’, and each was adapted to accommodate the musical conditions of the Dresden Hofkirche. Each mass entry is accompanied by the letter ‘P’. (A concordance for each mass is found today in Prague).
See Bacciagaluppi & Stockigt, ‘Italian Manuscripts of Sacred Music in Dresden’, 147–8, and Stockigt ‘From Italy to Zerbst via Prague and Dresden: The transmission and transformation of a Missa attributed to Alessandro Scarlatti’ (Fasch Studien, 13).
I am very grateful to Bruno Musumeci who has communicated his recognition that the Sanctus attributed to Bach, BWV 239, is based upon the opening of the Gloria of Zelenka’s reworking of this Mass by Caldara. See Peter Wollny, ‘Zur Identifizierung einiger anonym überlieferter liturgischer Werke aus Johann Sebastian Bachs Notenbibliothek’, Bach-Jahrbuch (2017), 43–87.
On this mass see Horn (Hkm, 163), who identifies the copyist as ZS O (Die wichtigsten Schreiber, 164). Incipits given in Zelenka-Dokumentation, 49–50, Nr. 63.
<text>Unbound score copy in poor condition. Parts are missing from Dresden.
Cover: gb (upper left) Nro. 56 (upper right) | Missa à 4 (Zelenka) dicta Reformata (NB: Reformata is not in Zelenka’s hand). No 6 (pencil).
Note that although the term ‘Missa Reformata’ is used by Zelenka in the Inventarium it might be that the term is not a title, but reference to Zelenka’s own extensive reworkings and revisions of Caldara’s mass. The source of this mass supplied to Zelenka is probably the next listing in the Catalogo (1765): I/C/6/7.
Information relating to the storage of this source is given on the left side of this cover in the hand of Schürer under whose supervision the Catalogo (1765) was compiled. His information corresponds with the listing of this Mass in this Catalogo (1765): Schranck No I. | C 6. Fach 6. Lage. | No 6.) Messa à 4 voci rifformata | co’ VVni Viola ed Org. Parti:[tura] e parti cav. Incipit (two bars), which includes the alteration made in red ink by Zelenka to vn. 1, bar 1 of the score.
Kept with the score is the label to correspond with the entry in the missing Catalogo (c1785): Schranck No: I. | Lit C. 8. Fach 6. Lage | No: 6) Messa | à 4 voci rifformata | co’ VVni Viola ed Org.| Partitura e parti | del Sigr. Caldara. Incipit (as above).
From its position in Zelenka’s Inventarium, this copy seems to have been acquired between 1736 and 1739. This source is in the hand of Zelenka and an unidentified scribe.
The Kyrie was not copied by Zelenka, but it was reworked by him. Many alterations seen in the score are in Zelenka’s hand in red ink, including changes in the opening bar of vn. 1 (which then alters the incipit). Oboes are added and alterations are made to violin parts and to the bass line, including the addition of figures.
On this source see Horn (Hkm, 162) who notes that this is the ‘Credo’ Mass of the same type as Mozart’s Missa Brevis F Major (K. 192). In this Dresden source (Mus. 2170-D-8), however, the Credo refrains are consistently deleted, although it cannot be determined whether these deletions were made by Zelenka or by a later user of the score. Incipits are given in Zelenka-Dokumentation, 52, Nr. 71.
Concordance: CZ-Pak, 202. Štefan, ([210] Sign. 202), prov. Görbig; Novák. NB: the incipit given agrees with the incipit given for the listing of this mass in the Catalogo (1765), I/C/6/7. RISM ID no. 550267241.</text>

<text>Score copy of a Missa tota with grey-blue wrapper. Parts are missing from Dresden.
Cover title (hand of Zelenka): D# No: 1 (23 ) | Missa Vix orimur=morimur | à 4 | C: A: T: B: | Violin 2 | Viola | Trombe 2 | Timpani (Trombe 2 and Timpani are bracketed with the instruction ‘ad libitu’) | e | Basso Continuo | di S: | Caldara.
Despite the title ‘Gloria e Credo’ given in the Catalogo (1765), this is a Missa tota. The incipit of the Catalogo (1765) is of the Kyrie from Missa vix orimur, morimur.
Zelenka’s alterations were made before early 1729. Horn identifies the copyist of Mus. 2170-D-13 as ZS O (Die wichtigsten Schreiber, 172) and Zelenka (Die wichtigsten Schreiber, 164).
The title given to this work in the Catalogo begins ‘Missa Brevis’, to which Zelenka later added ‘Vix orimur, morimur’. Of this complete mass setting Horn (Hkm,162) writes: ‘Vix orimur, morimur’ (as soon as born, we die), No. 23, is one of the shortest Masses in the Dresden repertoire [...] Incipits are given in Zelenka-Dokumentation, 50, Nr. 67.
To this work Zelenka added solemn instrumentation to the Kyrie, Gloria, and Credo. A facsimile edition of the work (with Foreword by Brian Pritchard) shows that although the Kyrie, Gloria, and Credo are heavily reworked by Zelenka, little (if any) alteration occurs in the remaining sections. This has led to my suggestion (given in ‘Bach’s Missa BWV 232/I’, 42) that a solemn Missa (Kyrie-Gloria) performed by members of the Dresden Hofkapelle might conclude with ‘Ordinary’ or a cappella settings of the Sanctus and Agnus performed by the Kapellknaben/Juvenes of Dresden’s Catholic court church.
Zelenka’s remark ‘Oss.’ suggests his copy came from a source held at the Cistercian monastery at Osek.
<text>Set of 26 parts in hand of various copyists, with additions by Zelenka and one other scribe. Some parts seem to be additions to the original set. The score is missing from Dresden.
Cover title: No: 8 | D | Caldara | Messa à 4 co’ V.V. e Viola | partit[ur]a e parti Cavate.
Zelenka’s addition of an independent vn. 1 part to the opening bar provides the incipit given in the Catalogo (1765).
At the head of the solo alto part is written in Zelenka’s hand: ‘per la Notte Santa’ (Christmas Eve). This remark suggests at least one occasion on which this work was performed in Dresden.
The title given in Zelenka’s Inventarium – ‘Quid mihi et tibi’ (RISM and the Zelenka-Dokumentation, p. 31 read this as ‘Quia mihi et tibi’) – a reference to the response of Jesus to Mary at the wedding at Cana: ‘Quid mihi et tibi est mulier?’ (John 2: 4).
Parts (8 vocal; 18 instrumental ): Soprano; Contr’Alto; Tenore Concer.; Basso Concertato; Hautbois I; Hautbois II; Violino I; Violino 2; Viola; Fagotto (‘ô Violone Rip.’ an addition); Organo o Tiorba (‘o Tiorba’ an addition); Canto; Alto (signed ‘Johannes Tha[m]me’); Tenore (signed ‘Johannes Thamme’); Basso; Violino I (first two staves pinned over with an alteration in Zelenka’s hand); Violino I (M: P: = Monsieur Pisendel; first two staves pinned over with an addition in Zelenka’s hand); Violino II; Violino II; Viola; Viola; Violoncello; Fagotto; Fagotto; Violone Ripieno. The hands of ZS 2 and Giovanni Alberto Ristori are seen in parts for this Mass in A. (Mus. 2170-D-14: I/C/7/1). These performance materials bear similarities to parts prepared for Francesco Poppe’s Litaniae Lauretanae (Mus. 3610-E-2a: II/P/1/6). These works come from the early 1730s.
NB: Zelenka’s margin note: ‘P’.
Concordances:
Several concordances for this mass are found in RISM. The incipits, however, do not correspond with the opening of this work because they are based upon the part for choral soprano. The Dresden source shows that Zelenka added an accompanying violin flourish to the opening bars. The incipit given in 1765 is based upon this addition.
Title on outer binding: No. 10 (pencil) Caldara, Antonio | Gloria, Agnus, Sanctus | a 4 voci con Stromti.
Inner wrapper (red pencil): Caldara.
Caption title (red pencil): Caldara.
Horn (Hkm, 163–4) notes that this mass first consisted of Caldara’s Gloria alone. Zelenka’s settings of the Sanctus and Agnus Dei then were added and a now-missing Kyrie also was composed. Zelenka’s reworking of the Credo now is missing. The Sanctus, Osanna, Agnus Dei were worked by Zelenka between 1726 and early 1729, while the Agnus Dei II comes from after early 1729.
Concordances:
1. CZ-Pkřiž, XXXV B 253b. Set of 21 arts, prov. Chr. Gayer. NB: a Kyrie setting to precede the Gloria is also kept with this collection. The Gloria incipit of this Kreuzherren example is of the opening two bars of the clarino solo (in C). Zelenka’s addition of an independent vn. 1 part to the opening bar of the Dresden example provides the incipit given in the Dresden Catalogo (1765). Thus, these two incipits differ.
2. CZ-Pkřiž, XXXV B 253a. Set of 13 parts for the Gloria, provenance Gayer, dated 1721.
Incipits given in Zelenka-Dokumentation, 50, Nr. 66.</text>

This label obliterates an earlier label, now illegible (except A 45, in pencil).
Inner blue-grey wrapper to the score with title (hand of Zelenka): gb (upper left); Nro. . . (upper right) | Miserere mei Deus | à 4 | Violin 2 | Viole 2 | ed | Organo | di | S: Caldara. Caption (red pencil, in the hand of F. A. Schubert?): Caldara.
Zelenka’s markings of instrumentation (addition of oboes; additions to the string parts; ‘Tutti’ and ‘R[ipieno]’ indications), figuring of the bass line (post 1725), and markings of tempo are seen throughout the copy. Horn identifies the copyist as ZS 1 (Die wichtigsten Schreiber, 165).
Zelenka added a dedication at the end of the score: A M D G B V M OO SS H AA P I R.
Concordance: CZ-Pkřiž, XXXVI B 264. Set of nine parts (C conc; A. conc; T; B conc; vn. 1,2; A tbn. conc; T tbn. conc; org.) from the second quarter of the 18th century is held in the Kreuzherren collection Prague. RISM ID no. 550283049.
Horn (Hkm, 160) notes that an un-revised copy of this setting is kept in Dresden, Mus. 2170-D-5,1. It probably provided the model for the copyist, who left all systems above the vocal part empty so that instrumentation could be added later. This source has the stamps of the Bibliotheca Musica Regia and Sachs. Landes-Bibl. ‘A 46.c’ is pencilled on the upper left of the title page. Incipit given in Zelenka-Dokumentation, 53, Nr. 81a.
On Caldara’s Miserere setting held by SLUB see Horn (Hkm, 160).</text>

<text>Mus. 2170-E-2,1: Bound score copy with blue-grey wrapper. It is in the hand of copyist ZS 0 (Horn, Die wichtigsten Schreiber, 173) with figures, dynamics, and scoring instructions, etc. added by Zelenka.
Title on wrapper (hand of Zelenka): Upper right: Nro 16 | Beatus vir | à 6 | Canto et Alto Concert. | C. A. T. B. Ripieni | 2 Violini | col | Organo | G# | del Sigr Caldara. Mus. 2170-E-2,2.
Set of 25 (8 vocal; 12 + 5 instrumental) parts with blue-grey wrapper. Horn identifies the copyist as ZS 0 (Die wichtigsten Schreiber, 174).
Title on wrapper: g (left): N: 16 (erased) 5to (upper left) | Beatus vir à 6 | C:A: Concert | C:A:T:B: Ripien | Violin 2 | Viol 1 | e | Organo | Parti 20 | Caldara.
The (earlier?) set of 20 parts probably accompanied Zelenka’s score (as noted on the score cover): Canto concertato; Alto concertato sempre; Tenore; Basso; Canto Rip.; Alto Rip.; Tenore Rip.; Basso Rip.; Violino Pmo; Violino Pmo; Violino 2do; Violino 2do; Viola; Violoncello; Violone Rip.; Tiorba; Organo; Hautbois 1mo; Hautbois 2do; Fagotto. Hand of ZS 0.
Five additional parts (hand of ZS 1) comprise: one part each for Violino Pmo; Violino 2do; Viola; Violone Ripieno; Fagotto.
Note that the parts for oboes, bassoon, and violone (the ripieno section) are based upon – but do not exactly follow – the parts for violin and organ, an indication that the Dresden copyists edited these.
This is a ‘number’ setting of nine movements. The score and parts of the opening ritornello do not agree exactly. (Two bars have been added to the parts – not evident in the score).
A noteworthy feature of the solo vocal writing, according to the Dresden parts, is that the soprano and alto soloists are not required to sing with the vocal ripienists at the setting of verse 9 (which is composed as a short, dramatic Szene). Figures added to the score by a scribe different from the copyist of the score. Zelenka’s additions consist of the inclusion of oboes (‘VV’ and ‘T’ on the violin stave), marks of dynamics, marks of orchestration, and a part for viola, although no viola stave is provided (eg, ‘NB. Viola col Tenore’, p. 24).
On this setting see Stockigt, ‘The Vespers Psalms of Jan Dismas Zelenka’, App. 2, No. 16. Incipits are given in Zelenka-Dokumentation, 53, Nr. 80. On Caldara Vespers psalm settings held by SLUB see Horn (Hkm, 160).
Concordance: CZ-Pak, 186. Set of nine parts (without va.). Štefan, ([197] Sign. 186), prov. Joseph Antonín Sehling. RISM ID no. 550267228.</text>
