Zelenka’s Missa votiva (ZWV 18) is the final Mass listing (non-autograph) in his Inventarium. From certain remarks written on the score it is known that the composer had suffered illness from which he recovered during 1739. The inscription on the title page (given above) translates as ‘I will pay my vows to the Lord, before all his people’. Further dedications and remarks on the score are:
Head of Kyrie: A M D G B M V OO SS H AA R[?] I R;
Conclusion of Gloria: O A M D G B M V OO SS H AA P I R;
Head of Credo: O A M † D G B M V OO SS H AA P I R;
Conclusion of Credo: A M D G B M V OO SS H A P I R
Conclusion Osanna: A M D G B V M OO SS H AA P I R.
At the conclusion of the autograph score Zelenka noted that the work was composed to the ‘Greater Glory of God in fulfillment of a vow: ‘Missam hanc A M D G ex voto posuit J D Z post recuperatum Deo Fautore Salutem.’
NB: The Diarium of the Dresden Jesuits reported on 2.7.1739 (Feast of the Visitation BVM) that Zelenka produced a new mass. (Sacrum novum produxit D. Zelenka).
In the later ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’(c1784), a score and parts for the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Agnus are listed as [Messa] No: 13), Messa Votiva (III/Z/10/4).
Concordance:
CZ-Pkřiž, XXXV D 80. Fourteen parts for the complete Missa votiva, and ten parts for the Kyrie and Gloria of this mass were held by the music library of the Prague Kreuzherren. Second quarter of the 18th c. RISM ID no. 550255329.
See Zelenka-Dokumentation, 147, Dok. 70; 288, ZWV 18 and (eds. R. Kubik, Th. Kohlhase), EdM 108, 1997. Also see Kohlhase , ‘Der Dresdener Hofkirchenkomponist’, 150-52. Also Stockigt, ‘The Missa votiva’ (43–8), where it is suggested that Sarro’s setting of the text ‘Gratias agimus tibii’ (seen in D-Dl, Mus. 2356-D-1 / Mus. 2358-D-42) provided the model for Zelenka‘s setting of the same text.
The Credo of this Mass was published by Johann Friedrich Rochlitz in his 'Sammlung vorzüglicher Gesangstücke ... Dritter Band ... vom Jahr 1700 bis um das Jahr 1760, 2te Abtheilung (Mainz: Schott’s Sons), 59–70.</text>

Bound in with vol. 2 of Missa votiva (see III/Z/9/4) is the cover, with title, for the Credo of this Mass (ZWV 15): ‘ex Missa | Eucha | ristica quae habetur in 6 Nro 47. | à 4 | C:A:T:B: | Violini 2 | Oboe 2 obligate | Viola | Trombe 2 | Corni da Caccia 2 | Timpani | e | Basso Continuo. | di | G:D:Z:’
In the later, undated ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’ (c1784) score and parts for the Kyrie and Gloria are listed as [Messa] No: 12) (Fach 10; Lage 3). The scoring given for both sections is: ‘à 4 voci co’ VVni. Ob. Vla, Corni, Trombe, Timp: ed Org.’
Zelenka’s mass settings from 1733, Missa Purificationis B.M.V. (ZWV 16) and Missa Eucharistica (ZWV 17), both scored with trumpets and horns, are the last solemnly-set masses to be composed by Zelenka.
Elsewhere I have suggested that Zelenka’s Missa Eucharistica was composed for the conclusion of the Corpus Christi octave in 1733. On 11 June Friedrich August II (who, according to the annual letter to Rome, considered the feast of Corpus Christi to be the most solemn and important of all) returned to Dresden from his Erbhuldigung visit to Freiberg. On that same day, 11 June, the Dresden Diarium noted that royal music was heard heard in the Catholic court church: ‘Hora 11 ... Musica Regia.’ See Stockigt in ‘Liturgical Music for a New Elector’, 81. This suggests that Missa Eucharistica (June 1733) probably predated the composition of Missa Purificationis (August 1733).</text>

              <text>This work by Domenico Sarri is registered twice in this Catalogo (1765) : once here and once as a Kyrie/Gloria setting under the name ‘Sarri’. See III/S/1/4 (Mus. 2356-D-1). Parts to accompany this score listed here are missing.
Although Zelenka ‘stretched’ the mass, and shortened the Gloria, there is no sign of his reworking in the score of this acquisition.
On Zelenka’s ‘stretching’ of this mass, see Wolfgang Horn, Hkm, p. 192.
The scoring (page 1, beginning of the Kyrie) is for Oboè; Violino; Violino; Canto; Canto; Alto; Tenore; Basso; [Organo]. Instrumentation (page 31, beginning of the Gloria) is for Tromba (in D); Oboè; Violino; [CCATB]; Organo. Traverse flutes are included in this setting.The score has no viola.
‘[...] a Kyrie e Gloria in D by Sarro reached Dresden twice. On the first occasion it entered Zelenka’s personal collection between 1730 and 1732 (D Dl, Mus. 2358-D-42); the second time, it arrived in Dresden some time between 1738 and 1740 as a score from Naples which Zelenka then carefully checked against his own copy, detecting and correcting a mistake by its copyist (a homoteleuton, D Dl, Mus. 2356-D-1, pp. 128–130)’. See Bacciagaluppi & Stockigt, ‘Italian Manuscripts of Sacred Music in Dresden’, 156.
Sarri’s setting of the text ‘Gratias agimus tibi’ in this mass appears to have provided Zelenka with the model for his setting of that same text in his Missa votiva. See III/Z/9/4. Discussed by Stockigt in ‘The Missa votiva’, 46–7.
Incipits given in Zelenka-Dokumentation, 66, Nr. 208.
In the later ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’ (c1784), where the work is listed under the heading ‘Zelenka’, score and parts are given for the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, and Agnus are listed for [Messa:] No: 11) Messa senza Credo (III/Z/10/2). The scoring given for all sections is: ‘à 5 voci co’ VVni. Oboi, Vla, ed Org.’</text>

On the occasion for which this mass was composed see Stockigt (‘After Six Weeks’, Table 10.2), where it is suggested that Missa gratias agimus tibi was composed for the churching ceremony of Maria Josepha held on 7.10.1730 (birthday of her husband, Saxon Electoral Prince Friedrich August II) following the much-desired birth of Saxon Prince Franz Xavier (b 25.9.1730), a birth which was described in the annual letter to Rome as being ‘not unlike a second Samuel [...] the result not so much of the prayers of the mother as of the two saints.’ [Xavier and Benno: the full name of Prince Xavier was Franz Xavier Albert August Ludwig Benno]. Annuae literae Regiae Missionis Dresdensis Ao 1730. ARSI (I-Rar), Boh 147, 19.
In the later ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’ (c1784) score and parts for the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus are listed for [Messa:] No: 9) Messa Charitatis (III/Z/9/4). The scoring given for all sections of the Mass is: ‘à 4 voci co’ VVni. Ob: Vla, Fl. Corni, ed Org.’ The incipits for the Credo, Sanctus, Agnus are almost identical with those given for the Missa Nativitatis Domini, ZWV 8: III/Z/8/1.
The undated Missa Charitatis is the last of a trilogy of ‘Ordinary’ Mass settings by Zelenka bearing the titles of the three Theological Virtues: Faith, Hope, and Charity. They are: Missa Spei (ZWV 5) ‘1724’ (date given by Norbert Schulz, 16); Missa Fidei (ZWV 6) dated ‘25 Novem. 1725’; Missa Charitatis (ZWV 10) c1725–7.
Zelenka’s mannerisms of notation indicate that the score of Missa Charitatis was prepared between late 1725 and late 1727/8. The dates proposed for this Mass setting are: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, c1727; Sanctus, c1726; Benedictus, late 1727/8; Osanna, late 1727/8; Agnus Dei, c1726. It is possible that movements dated c1726 (Sanctus; Agnus Dei) were originally written for the Missa Nativitatis (ZWV 8). The position of Missa Charitatis in Zelenka’s Inventarium suggests it was finalised after Missa Nativitatis (1726) and the now-missing Missa Corporis Domin[ic]i (c1727).
See Zelenka-Dokumentation, 287, ZWV 10 (given as Missa Caritatis).
This mass is listed by name in the Breitkopf non-thematic catalogue (Ostermesse 1779): ‘Missa Charitatis, Kyrie cum Gloria & Credo, à 2 Corni, 2 Oboi, 2 Violini, Viola, 4 Voci, e Fondamento. P. 4 thl. St. 3 thl. 16 gl.’ (1769). The original scoring (which included three oboes and two horns) suggests that the work was also listed in the Breitkopf non-thematic catalogue (Michaelmesse1761): ‘Missa, à 2 Corni, 3 Oboi, 2 Violini, Viola, 4 Voci, Basso e Organo. a 4 thl.’
Pagination of the autograph begins with the Quoniam, followed by the Kyrie eleison; Christe eleison; Kyrie eleison: Gloria: Sanctus; Agnus Dei.
Concl. of score: O A M D G B V M OO SS H AA P [?].
In the later ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’ (c1784) score and parts for the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, and Agnus are listed for [Messa:] No: 8) Messa senza Credo (III/Z/9/3).
Zelenka’s remark ‘facta occasione onomasticae dies S: M: Principesse ac Domine nostrae’ acknowledges that this mass was composed for the name-day of Maria Josepha before she became Queen when her husband, Friedrich August II, was elected King of Poland (October 1733). Wolfgang Horn (‘Opera, aria and Zelenka: Remarks on a Special relationship’, Clavibus unitis 4 (2015), 61) concludes that this mass probably was composed in 1732. Although both the birth- and name-day of Maria Josepha was always shown in the Galla-Tage lists of the HStCal as 8 December (Feast of the Conception BVM within the octave of St Francis Xavier), her name day also came to be celebrated on the feast of St Joseph (19 March). In the 1738 annual letter to Rome from Dresden it was stated that St Joseph (19 March) was Maria Josepha’s saint, (Annuae Literae Missionis Dresdensis ad annum 1738 (ARSI (I-Rar), Boh 157, 44). However, the HStCal continued to list 8 December as her birth and name day to be celebrated ‘in Galla’.
No dedication copy of this mass is known at present, and the work is unlisted in royal music catalogues.
See Zelenka-Dokumentation, 287, ZWV 14.
The inclusion in the scoring of flutes, two horns, two clarini, and timpani suggests that perhaps this mass once was held by Sehling titled Missa sanctae conversationis (now missing in CZ-Pak). See Štefan ([1468] Sign. ?), prov. Joseph Antonín Sehling.</text>

In the later ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa ’ (c1784) score and parts for the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus are listed for [Messa:] No: 7) Messa Paschalis (III/Z/9/2).
Almost certainly composed for Easter Monday 1726 (22 April), when the Dresden Diarium Missionis reported: ‘Dimidia 11 Cantatum cum assistentia [...] Musicam produxit Dominus Zelenka’. Revised c1732 at which time the ‘Benedictus’ and ‘Osanna’ movements were inserted.
See Zelenka-Dokumentation, 129–30, Dok. 39; 286, ZWV 7.
See Andrew Frampton, 'A Critical Edition of Jan Dismas Zelenka's Missa Paschalis, ZWV 7.' BMus (Hons) Diss. (2 vols.), University of Melbourne, 2013. Also 'A Copyist of Bach and Zelenka: identifying the scribe of GB-Ob MS Tenbury 749' (unpublished conference paper, Melbourne Bach Forum, 25-27 2014).
Concordances:
1. CZ-Pk, 7452. Score copy (stamp: ‘Verein der Kunstfreunde für Kirchenmusik’)
2. CZ-Pnm, Mělník 24. Set of ten parts without ‘Benedictus’, ‘Osanna’ (Seb. Böhm, c.1750)
3. CZ-Pnm, XXVIII E 229. Score copy, without ‘Benedictus’, ‘Osanna’ (Trolda, 1924, after CZ-Pnm Mělník 24)
4. CZ-Pnm, XXVIII E 230. Score copy (stamp: ‘Verein der Kunstfreunde für Kirchenmusik’). Also score copy of ‘Benedictus’, ‘Osanna’ (Trolda, 1929)
5. GB-Ob, MS Tenbury 749. Score copy, without ‘Benedictus’, ‘Osanna’ (18th c.). Andrew Frampton (‘A copyist of Bach and Zelenka’) has established that this Tenbury source of ZWV 7 is in the hand of Johann Friedrich Agricola, dated by Frampton as c1751.
6. GB-Ob, MS Tenbury 603. Parody of the Kyrie eleison I, Christe eleison, Et incarnatus est, Credo in unum Deum as anthem ‘O sing unto the Lord’ (see ZWV 221)
7. D-B, SA 690. (Pisendel’s hand?). Kyrie: Gloria; Credo’ Sanctus/Agnus. Without Osanna and Benedictus. RISM ID no. 469069000
The inclusion in the scoring of two clarini, two trumpets, and timpani suggests that perhaps this mass (or ZWV 9) once was held by Sehling, titled Missa Tranquilli animi (now missing in CZ-Pak). See Štefan ([1469] Sign. ?), prov. Joseph Antonín Sehling.</text>

In the later ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa ’ (c1784) score and parts for the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus are listed for Messa: No: 6) Corporis Domini (III/Z/9/1). The scoring given for all sections is: à 4 voci co’ VVni. Vla, Oboi, Corni , Tromb. Timp. ed Org.
NB: the incipit given for an anonymous Credo setting listed under MUSICA SENZA NOME DELL'AUTORE (see III/27/13) in A Major agrees with the incipit given for Missa Corporis Domini in the Catalogo (c1784) for the Credo in D Major in that same Catalogo (III/Z/9/1).
Zelenka’s setting Missa Corporis Domini ZWV 9 might have been composed for the octave of Corpus Christi, 1727. In that year, on 8.6.1727 (Trinity Sunday: Dedication of the Dresden Catholic court church), the Diarium noted that Zelenka was responsible for the music (‘Musicam fecit D. Zelenka’).
Concordances:
1. D-B, Am.B 361 (II): Kyrie and Gloria only (late 18th century). RISM ID no. 452505217;
2. D-B, Mus. MS 30817, No. 1: score copy of Kyrie, Gloria (18th c.);
3. D-B, Am.B 362: complete score in the hand of Gottlob Harrer. RISM ID no. 452505220. See Kollmar, Gottlob Harrer (1703-1755), 305–06;
4. D-B, Mus. MS 23541/5: 18 performance parts (incomplete) for the entire Mass in the hand of Harrer, RISM ID no. 452522198;
5. CZ-Pkřiž, XXXV D 131. Kyrie and Gloria from this mass titled Missa S. Antonii Padua kept by the Kreuzherren Prague. Comprises a set of 14-15 parts, dated ‘1750’. RISM ID no. 550255394
6. CZ-Pnm 65/52, Catalogues 1720, 1733, f. 3: ‘Missa ex d S: Antoniis. 1ae classis: Zelenka.’
See Zelenka-Dokumentation, 286, ZWV 9. Kohlhase , ‘Der Dresdener Hofkirchenkomponist’, 143.
The inclusion in the scoring of two clarini, two trumpets, and timpani suggests that perhaps this mass (or ZWV 7) once was held by Sehling titled Missa Tranquilli animi (now missing in CZ-Pak). See Štefan ([1469] Sign. ?), prov. Joseph Antonín Sehling.</text>

Timp. ed Org.
See Zelenka-Dokumentation, 131, Nr. 45; 287, ZWV 11.
Missa Circumcisionis Domini was almost certainly intended to be heard on 1.1.1729, feast of the Circumcision OL (titular feast of the Society of Jesus). Earlier, however, on the day of this feast in 1724 (1.1.1724) the Dresden Diarium Missionis reported that Zelenka had composed an attractive new Mass (which was long) and the Prince and Princess had attended its performance. (‘Composuit novum Sacrum elegans Dominus Zelenka; interfuit toto Cantato quod longum fuit, Serenissimi Princeps et Principessa. ...’). Is it possible that parts of Missa Circumcisionis were composed late in 1723 for New Year’s Day 1724, then reworked and finalised late in 1728 for performance of New Year’s Day 1729? Note that in his thesis of 1944 Norbert Schulz gave the date of Missa Circumcisionis as ‘1723’.
This is one of two masses by Zelenka (both now missing) once in the possession of Johann Friedrich Fasch that were listed into the Concert-Stube of the Zerbst court, 1743.
Entered into the Breitkopf non-thematic catalogue (Michaelmesse 1761) as ‘Missa, à 2 Clarini, Tymp. 2 Corni, ô 2 Clarini con Princ. 2 Oboi, 2 Violini, Viola, 4 Voci, Basso e Organo. a 5 thl.’. Perhaps this is also the listing in the catalogue (Ostermesse 1769) as ‘Kyrie cum Gloria, à 4 Clar. Tymp. 2 Violini, 2 Oboi, Viola, Basso, 4 Voci e Fondamento. P. 3 thl. St. 2 [?] thl. 12 gl.’.
Concordances:
1. D-B, Mus. MS 23 540. Score copy (‘Aus Emanuel Bachs Nachlaß, Hamburg 1799 [...] G. Poelchau’) RISM ID no. 452522194;
1a. The dates given by Zelenka suggest that this Mass was composed for performance during the octave of the feast of St Francis Xavier, 1729. St Francis Xavier was the Patron Saint of Maria Josepha, whose birth- and name-day (8 December) fell within the Xavier octave. The name Franz Xaver or Franziska Xaveria was included in the baptismal names of each child born to Maria Josepha.
In the later ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’ (c1784) score and parts for the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, and Agnus are listed for [Messa] No: 4) Divi Xaverii (III/Z/8/4).
On this setting, see Zelenka-Dokumentation, 132, Nr. 50; 287, ZWV 12, and Stockigt, ‘The Historical Background’. Preface to score Zelenka: Missa Divi Xaverii, ed. Vaclav Luks (Praha: Bärenreiter, 2016), v–vii.
This is one of two masses by Zelenka (both now missing) once in the possession of Johann Friedrich Fasch that were listed into the Concert-Stube of the Zerbst court, 1743.
Concordances:
Zelenka transformed the original Kyrie/Gloria pair of 1723 into a Missa tota. Andrew Frampton (‘Jan Dismas Zelenka’s Missa Sancti Spiritus, ZWV 4) suggests that the ‘Et resurrexit’ and ‘Benedictus’ appear to be reworkings made early 1729 of movements from unidentified settings by Zelenka composed c1723-25.
Parts for the original version (see III/7/12/1) and for the revised version[s] are missing. The score copy made by Zelenka’s composition student Gottlob Harrer (see below: D-B, Sing-Akademie zu Berlin Notenarchiv - SA 691) appears to be based upon a now-missing set of parts which indicate an even later revision.
Cover label on vol. 1 (Mus. 2358-D-18,1) for the now-missing original parts (1723) as listed in the Hofkirche ‘Catalogo’ (c1784): Schranck No: III | Lit: Z. 12. Fach 6. Lage | No. 23. In 1723 the Dresden Diarium Missionis reported that on Pentecost Sunday (16 May: also Feast of St John of Nepomuk, duplex II classis in the Jesuit calendar) the royal musicians performed the mass with intraden at 11 o’clock. (Cantatum hora 11. Fecerunt Regii Musici musicam cum intradis, quae toto triduo factae sunt ad Sacrum Cantatum). Perhaps this was the occasion when the Kyrie and Gloria of Zelenka’s Missa S. Spiritus was first heard (ZWV 4).
On this mass, see Zelenka-Dokumentation, 113, Nr. 16; 286, ZWV 4.
In the later ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa ’ (c1784) score and parts are shown for the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus (III/Z/8/3). The scoring given for the Kyrie is: à 4 voci co’ VVni. Ob: Fl. Vla, Tromb: Timp. ed Org.’; for the remaining sections of the Mass: ‘à 4 voci co’ VVni. Ob: Vla, Corni, Trombe, Timp: ed Org.’ On the original set of parts for the Kyrie and Gloria (1723), see III/Z/12/1.
In the later ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa’ (c1784) score and parts for the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus are listed for Messa: No: 2) Messa Nativitatis (III/Z/8/1). The incipits for the Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus almost match those given for Messa: No: 9) Missa Charitatis, ZWV 10: III/Z/9/4 (with horns replacing trumpets).
This mass was first produced on the second day of the Christmas triduum, 1726. On that day (26.12.1726: S. Stephani Protomartyr) the Dresden Diarium Missionis reported: ‘Cantatum cum assistentia. . . . fuerunt intradae. Musicam produxit D. Zelenka’.
See Zelenka-Dokumentation, 130, Nr. 40; 286, ZWV 8.
This is probably the mass entered into the Breitkopf non-thematic catalogues (Michaelmesse 1761; Ostermesse 1769) as: Missa à 2 Corni, 2 Flauti, 2 Oboi, 2 Violini, Viola, 4 Voci, Basso e Organo. a 4 thl. (1761); — Kyrie cum Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Osanna & Agnus à 2 Corni, 2 Flauti, 2 Oboi, 2 Violini, Viola, 4 Voci, e Fondamento. P. 5 thl. St. 4 thl. 12 gl. (1769).
Caption title/dedication: I: N: J: C. The lack of the usual dedication formula suggests that the score of this mass was dedicated to Maria Josepha (that is, it was not composed to a commission of the court).
Concl. of score (autogr.): A: 1733 inchoata est Messa praesens 14 Aug: et finita cum Gratia Divina quamvis aegrotassem 23. ejusdem. (In the year 1733. The present Mass was begun on 14 August and although I was ill, [it] was finished by Divine Grace on the 23rd of the same.) Facs. of Zelenka’s note is reproduced by Stockigt in Jan Dismas Zelenka, ch. 6, Pl. 4.
In the later ‘Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa ...’ (c1784) both score and parts are listed for Missa: No: 1) Missa Purificationis (III/Z/7/12). Two sets of parts are listed for the Kyrie (‘Kyrie in duplo’).
See Zelenka-Dokumentation, 139, Nr. 61; 287, ZWV 16.
On the occasion for which this mass was written see Horn (Hkm, 90) where it is proposed that Missa Purificationis B:V:M: was composed for the churching ceremony (Kirchgang, not the birth as RISM suggests) held six weeks after the birth of Saxon Prince Karl (b 13.7.1733). On masses composed by Zelenka for Maria Josepha’s churching ceremonies see Stockigt, ‘After Six Weeks’, Table 10.2.
Zelenka’s two mass settings written in 1733, Missa Purificationis B.M.V. (ZWV 16) and Missa Eucharistica (ZWV 17), both scored with trumpets and horns, are the last solemnly-set masses to be composed by Zelenka.
Perhaps this is the mass entered into the Breitkopf non-thematic catalogue (Ostermesse 1769) on page 17 as ‘Zelencka, Joh. Dism. Comp. Reg. Pol. El. Sax. Cap. Mag. Missa Kyrie cum Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Osanna, & Agnus à [illegible] Clar. Tymp. 2 Oboi, 2 Flauti, 2 Violini, Viola, 2 Sopr. Alt. Ten. Bass e Fondamento. P. 5 thl. St. 5 thl. 8 gl.’.
Concordance: The incipit in the Catalog 1765 agrees with a Missa integra (Missae Dominicales) listing in the Osek Inventory, 1754, ‘sub littera D fol. 20r, No. 25’ in D, by Zelenka.</text>

In the later‘ Catalogo della Musica di Chiesa ...’ (c1784) score only is listed for the antiphon ‘Alma Redemptoris’ No. 2 by Zeiler (III/Z/7/3). The scoring is given as: ‘à Contr’alto Solo co’ VVni Vla ed Org.’</text>
