Although this score is not in the hand of Baldan, it comes from his copying house. If the date given above is correct, this would be the latest of the dated scores listed in the Catalogo from Baldan’s Venetian business and thus, a terminus ante quem for the sacred music he supplied to Dresden is given. <br />
The hand of this copyist is the same as that seen in Ciampi’s Missa solenne (I/C/9/1) now held in Berlin (also dated ‘1758 | 21 7bre’ [September]), as well as the mass movements by Puppi (II/P/14/2). <br />
I am grateful to Wolfgang Eckhardt who has advised that the watermark (three hats; countermark, the letter ‘B’) is probably from a paper mill in the Veneto, also seen in Galuppi’s Magnificat, Mus. 2973-D-27.

It was copied by Iseppo (Giuseppe) Baldan who supplied it to Dresden together with the greater part of the Galuppi collection. On the composers with the family name ‘Chiesa’ see the listing (I/C/8/7). The article ‘Chiesa, Melchiorre’ in GMO (author not named) reports that in Milan (1770), Charles Burney wrote: ‘Chiesa and Monza seem and are said to be the two best composers for the stage here at present’. RISM and Eitner (II, 423–4) attribute In hoc mare to Melchiore Chiesa (Ms. 58. Kgl. Musilaliensamlg.)

Caselli’s motet Sit avernus seems to have been performed by the Italian alto castrato, Pasquale Bruscolini (known as Pasqualino) who, according to Fürstenau (II, 280), arrived in Dresden on 6 March 1753. This copy is in the same hand as the motet Si ab alto monte (D-Dl, Mus. 2-E-14), a source listed as an anonymous work under ‘MUSICA SENZA NOME DELL’AUTORE’ at the end of this catalogue of 1765. See III/28/1. <br />
(Is the composer Caselli the same Caselli whose name appears in the Requiem by Galuppi? See D-Dl, Mus. 2973-D-23,1, a Venetian source).

The present source (Mus. 2952-D-2) comprises Gloria (v. 1) and Sanctus (v. 2). Each is in Heinichen’s hand. Parts are missing from Dresden. <br />
Caption title, v. 1 (the setting in G): Gloria (‘abbreviato’) del Sigr Angelo Ant. Caroli Bolognese. ‘32’ [minuten?] is noted at the conclusion of this movement. <br />
This work has no Kyrie setting. (None of the Kyrie settings of Caroli held by SLUB today matches the incipit given in this Catalogo, 1765). The incomplete Gloria, however, is preceded by two bars of manuscript, perhaps the final cadence of the Kyrie? <br />
Caption title, v. 2 (setting in G): Sanctus et Agnus dei; Cavato dal Gloria del Sigr. Angelo Anto Caroli Bo | lognese. The conclusion bears the date: ‘Mense Augusti 1726’. <br />
Horn (Hkm, 125) notes that in this G Major setting Heinichen’s reworking includes not only the addition of Sanctus and Agnus Dei through parody of individual Gloria segments, but also the abbreviation of some passages. On the now lost title page of the source Mus. 2952-D-2 Heinichen remarked: ‘Messa . . . abbreviata e aggiustata all’uso della cappella di Dresda di Giov. Heinichen’ (known from the SLB card catalogue). This remark indicates that, apart from the Gloria, the Kyrie and Credo of this mass existed when it was catalogued by the SLB.

Horn names these constructions ‘Stretched (gestreckte) Masses’.

The (earlier?) set of 20 parts probably accompanied Zelenka’s score (as noted on the score cover): Canto concertato; Alto concertato sempre; Tenore; Basso; Canto Rip.; Alto Rip.; Tenore Rip.; Basso Rip.; Violino Pmo; Violino Pmo; Violino 2do; Violino 2do; Viola; Violoncello; Violone Rip.; Tiorba; Organo; Hautbois 1mo; Hautbois 2do; Fagotto. Hand of ZS 0.<br />
Five additional parts (hand of ZS 1) comprise: one part each for Violino Pmo; Violino 2do; Viola; Violone Ripieno; Fagotto. <br />
Note that the parts for oboes, bassoon, and violone (the ripieno section) are based upon – but do not exactly follow – the parts for violin and organ, an indication that the Dresden copyists edited these.<br />
This is a ‘number’ setting of nine movements. The score and parts of the opening ritornello do not agree exactly. (Two bars have been added to the parts – not evident in the score). <br />
A noteworthy feature of the solo vocal writing, according to the Dresden parts, is that the soprano and alto soloists are not required to sing with the vocal ripienists at the setting of verse 9 (which is composed as a short, dramatic Szene). Figures added to the score by a scribe different from the copyist of the score. Zelenka’s additions consist of the inclusion of oboes (‘VV’ and ‘T’ on the violin stave), marks of dynamics, marks of orchestration, and a part for viola, although no viola stave is provided (eg, ‘NB. Viola col Tenore’, p. 24).<br />

Zelenka’s markings of instrumentation (addition of oboes; additions to the string parts; ‘Tutti’ and ‘R[ipieno]’ indications), figuring of the bass line (post 1725), and markings of tempo are seen throughout the copy. Horn identifies the copyist as ZS 1 (Die wichtigsten Schreiber, 165). <br />
Zelenka added a dedication at the end of the score: A M D G B V M OO SS H AA P I R. <br />

Horn (Hkm, 160) notes that an un-revised copy of this setting is kept in Dresden, Mus. 2170-D-5,1. It probably provided the model for the copyist, who left all systems above the vocal part empty so that instrumentation could be added later. This source has the stamps of the Bibliotheca Musica Regia and Sachs. Landes-Bibl. ‘A 46.c’ is pencilled on the upper left of the title page. Incipit given in Zelenka-Dokumentation, 53, Nr. 81a. <br />
