All Mass and Vespers (unlisted here) settings by Fasch held by SLUB are written on paper originating from the paper mill in Kirchberg (near Zwickau) operated by Johann Christian Hertel. See Manfred Fechner, ‘Zur Datierung von Johann Friedrich Faschs 'Dresdner' Vesperkompositionen und Messen’ 57–8.
Fasch also used this paper for works composed in Prague during the time he was employed by Count Morzin, 1721–22.
In addition to two Mass settings by Fasch once in Heinichen’s collection, another mass by Fasch was held by Zelenka: Missa sine nomine, Inventarium 9/38, a work now missing (?) and not catalogued by SLB.
The Magnificat, listed with these psalms in Zelenka’s Inventarium, now is missing from Dresden, and it was not listed by Eitner. Parts are not shown in the Catalogo 1765 to accompany this setting. Wolfgang Horn states (Hkm, 133) that the identification of this Vespers cycle attributed to Annibale Pio Fabri may be traced back to Moritz Fürstenau.
Title page 1: C (left) Nr 3 (right) | Fabri (hand of Zelenka). Centre: Schranck No. I | F 13. Fach, 5. Lage. The remainder is obliterated by a catalogue label to correspond with the entry in the missing Catalogo (c1784): Schranck No. I. | Lit. F. 14. Fach 7. Lage | Laudate pueri | à 4 voci | co’ VVni ed Org.| Partitura sola | del Sigr Fabri.
This set of psalms must have been acquired by Zelenka before he assembled the Psalmi varii (pre-1735). Each score of these psalms (de Confessore) bears signs of revision by Zelenka, including the addition of orchestration marks (‘Tutti’, ‘Solo’, ‘VV’ – implying the addition of oboes), additions to the string parts, figuring of and alterations to the bass line, addition of dynamics, articulation, and marks of tempo.
Although Eitner reported that these settings were in the hand of Zelenka, Horn (‘Die wichtigsten Schreiber’,164, 174) identifies the copyist as ZS O.
Fabri’s musical connections and the circuits he travelled as a singer (including London seasons for Handel) place him within one of the streams of performers/composers whose works are incorporated into Zekenka’s repertoire of Vespers psalms.
On this setting see Stockigt, ‘The Vespers Psalms of Jan Dismas Zelenka’, App. 2, No. 38.
Title page 4: Nr 39 (upper right; Zelenka’s hand) | Laudate omnes Dominu[m] gentes | à 4 | C: A: T: B: | Violin 2 | Viola 1 | e | Basso Continuo | Fabri. Left: Schranck No. I. | F. 13. Fach, 4. Lage | Incipit. This catalogue information corresponds with the location given for this work in the Catalogo (1765).
This set of psalms must have been acquired by Zelenka before he assembled the Psalmi varii (pre-1735). Each score of these Vespers psalms (de Confessore) bears signs of revision by Zelenka, including the addition of orchestration marks (‘Tutti’, ‘Solo’, ‘VV’ – implying the addition of oboes), additions to the string parts, figuring of and alterations to the bass line, addition of dynamics, articulation, and marks of tempo.
Although Eitner reported that these works were in the hand of Zelenka, Horn (‘Die wichtigsten Schreiber’, 164, 174) identifies the copyist as ZS O.
2, No. 39.
The Magnificat, listed with these psalms in Zelenka’s Inventarium, now is missing from Dresden, and it was not listed by Eitner. Parts are not shown in the Catalogo 1765 to accompany this setting. Wolfgang Horn states (Hkm, 133, without source) that the identification of this Vespers cycle attributed to Annibale Pio Fabri may be traced back to Moritz Fürstenau.
Title page 3: Nr 4 (upper right; Zelenka’s hand) | Fabri. Centre: Schranck No. I | F. 13. Fach, 3. Lage | Beatus vir | à 4 voci | co’ VVni Vla e Basso | Partitura sola. Incipit. This catalogue information corresponds with the location given for this listing in the Catalogo (1765). This set of psalms by Fabri must have been acquired by Zelenka before he assembled the Psalmi varii (pre-1735).
Each score of Fabri’s settings (de Confessore) bears signs of revision by Zelenka, including the addition of orchestration marks (‘Tutti’, ‘Solo’, ‘VV’ - implying the addition of oboes), additions to the string parts, figuring of and alterations to the bass line, addition of dynamics, articulation, and marks of tempo. Although Eitner reported that these works were in the hand of Zelenka, Horn (‘Die wichtigsten Schreiber’, 164, 174) identifies the copyist as ‘ZS Ovar’ (c1725–early 1730s).
Fabri’s musical connections and the circuits he travelled as a singer (including London seasons for Handel) place him within one of the streams of performers/composers whose works are incorporated into Zekenka’s repertoire of Vespers psalms.
On these settings of Fabri see Stockigt, ‘The Vespers Psalms of Jan Dismas Zelenka’, App. 2, No. 37.
<text>Bound volume containing copies of five psalm settings, each with original blue-grey or pale brown cover.
Title page 2: No: 2 (centre) Nr 36 (upper right; Zelenka’s hand) | Fabri : Centre: Schranck No. I | F. 13. Fach, 2. Lage | Confitebor | à 4 voci | co’ VVni Vla e Basso | Partitura sola. Incipit. This catalogue information corresponds with the location given for this listing in the Catalogo (1765).
This set of psalms attributed to Fabri must have been acquired by Zelenka before he assembled the Psalmi varii (pre-1735). Each score of these Vespers psalms (de Confessore) bears signs of revision by Zelenka, including the addition of orchestration marks (‘Tutti’, ‘Solo’, ‘VV’ - implying the addition of oboes), additions to the string parts, figuring of and alterations to the bass line, addition of dynamics, articulation, and marks of tempo.
Although Eitner reported that these settings were in the hand of Zelenka, Horn (Die wichtigsten Schreiber, 164, 174) identifies the copyist as ZS O.
Fabri’s musical connections and the circuits he travelled as a singer (including London seasons for Handel) place him within one of the streams of performers/composers whose works are incorporated into Zekenka’s repertoire of Vespers psalms. This setting, however, is attributed to a variety of composers, as shown below.
On these settings, see Stockigt, ‘The Vespers Psalms of Jan Dismas Zelenka’, App. 2, No. 36. Incipit given in Zelenka-Dokumentation, 55, Nr. 92.
<text>Bound volume containing copies of five psalm settings, each with original blue-grey or pale brown cover. The Magnificat that was listed with these psalms in Zelenka’s Inventarium now is missing from Dresden and it was not listed by Eitner. Also missing are the parts that once accompanied this Dixit Dominus setting. Wolfgang Horn states (Hkm, 133) that the identification of ‘Fabri’ as Annibale Pio Fabri may be traced back to Moritz Fürstenau.
Title page 1: C (left) Nr 6 (right) | Dixit à 4 | Viol. 2 | Viola | Trombe 2. | Fabri.
Left: Schranck No. I | 13. Fach, 1. Lage | Incipit. This information corresponds with the location given for this listing in the Catalogo (1765).
This set of psalm settings by Fabri must have been acquired by Zelenka before he assembled the Psalmi varii (c1735) because it is included in that collection.
Each score of these Vespers psalms (de Confessore) bears signs of revision by Zelenka, including the addition of orchestration marks (‘Tutti’, ‘Solo’, ‘VV’ – implying the addition of oboes), additions to the string parts, figuring of and alterations to the bass line, additional dynamics, articulation, and marks of tempo. Two trumpets (‘Clarino I’; ‘Clarino II’) are included in this C major setting.
Although Eitner reported that these works were in the hand of Zelenka, Horn (Die wichtigsten Schreiber, 164, 174) identifies the copyist as ZS O.
On this work, see Stockigt, ‘The Vespers Psalms of Jan Dismas Zelenka’, App. 2, No. 35.
The incipit is also given in Zelenka-Dokumentation, 55, Nr. 91.
Michael Driscoll advises that this Dixit Dominus in Zelenka’s collection attributed to Fabri is a unique attribution found nowhere else. RISM listings attribute the setting to a variety of composers, mainly to one named ‘Schmidt’.
The Credo is by an unknown/unidentified Roman composer.
Title page: Partitura | Messa | A’ Cinque Voci con Strum[en]ti | Concertata | Del Sigr Francesco Durante.
Zelenka’s hand is seen throughout this score which he ‘stretched’ so as to create a Missa tota, The insert of the Quoniam in his hand is written on paper with a tre lunae watermark. See Bacciagaluppi & Stockigt, ‘Italian Manuscripts of Sacred Music in Dresden’, 150–51.
On physical aspects of this score, and on the origins of the Credo, see Bacciagaluppi, ‘Rom, Prag, Dresden: Pergolesi und die Neapolitanische Messe’, 161–6, esp. 161–3 on Zelenka’s reworkings. Mus. 2397-D-1a is a copy of the same Kyrie and Gloria, not catalogued in the Catalogo of 1765. Bound in the 19th century. This Italian copy bears the stamp of the Bibliotheca Musica Regia and pencil mark: A 75.
It is possible that this was among the scores as purchased in Naples and/or Rome during the grand tour of Saxon Prince Friedrich Christian (May 1738–October 1739).
<text>Score copy of a Missa tota.
Zelenka’s workings were made after 1725 and before early 1729. The parts are missing.
Caption title: Kyrie.
Settings of the Kyrie and Gloria have page references to Osanna, Benedictus, Dona nobis, indications that Zelenka ‘stretched’ Durante’s setting. The Quoniam is set twice. At the conclusion of the Mass Zelenka wrote: NB Dona nobis ex Kyrie primo pag: 1.
Horn (Hkm, 179) notes that this was composed as a Kyrie–Gloria pair, then ‘stretched’ by Zelenka. This is demonstrated in the writing of the source in Mus. 2397-D-10: the main section of the note text of Kyrie and Gloria was copied by ZS O (Horn: Die wichtigsten Schreiber, 172). Zelenka added the viola part, dynamics, scoring instructions, and figured the bass line. The Sanctus and Agnus are entirely in Zelenka’s hand.
In circa 1727 Zelenka acquired six mass settings by Italian and Imperial composers. He entered these into his Inventarium immediately after listings of masses he composed in 1726 (No. 7: Missa Paschalis ZWV 7; No. 8: Missa Nativitatis Domini ZWV 8) and circa 1727 (No. 9: Missa Corporis Domini[ci]). Immediately following the listings of these six masses Zelenka entered his own Missa Charitatis ZWV 10, also from circa 1727.
This group of six masses was entered into the Inventarium (p. 5) as
No. 10, Antonio Caldara, Missa Providentiae (D-Dl, Mus 2170-D-7);
No. 11, Francesco Durante, Missa Modestiae (D-Dl, Mus. 2397-D–10);
No. 12, Francesco Mancini, Missa Temperantiae (D-Dl, Mus. 2203-D–2);
No. 13, Alessandro Scarlatti, Missa Magnanimitatis (now missing);
No. 14 (p. 6), Johann Joseph Fux, Missa Fiduciae (D-Dl, Mus. 2130-D-1), and
No. 15, Johann Georg Reinhard, Missa Vita hominis brevis est (D-Dl, Mus. 2793-D-2).
Each mass was ‘stretched’, and each was adapted to accommodate the musical conditions of the Dresden Hofkirche. Each mass entry is accompanied by the letter ‘P’. (A concordance for each mass is found today in Prague).
See Bacciagaluppi & Stockigt, ‘Italian Manuscripts of Sacred Music in Dresden’, 147–8, and Stockigt ‘From Italy to Zerbst via Prague and Dresden: The transmission and transformation of a Missa attributed to Alessandro Scarlatti’ (forthcoming).
This present work is almost certainly the mass titled ‘Messa a 5. Voci’ by ‘Franc. Durante’ entered into the music catalogue of Electress Maria Antonia.
Concordance:
CZ-Pak, 319a. A set of 13 parts for Kyrie e Gloria by Durante. An Italian copy? Štefan, ([331] Sign. 319a), gives a cross reference to a missing set of parts for a ‘Messa triplicato’ by Durante, ([335] Sign. 319b), prov. Görbig, Novák.
NB: Zelenka’s Inventarium note: ‘P’. Incipits given in Zelenka-Dokumentation, 55, Nr. 88.</text>

Cover title: In Nomine Domini | Messa à 4 Voci| con | Violini, Violetta, é Basso | del | Sigl Antonio Duni | [1]744.
This score is in the hand seen in all sources of sacred music by Antonio Duni listed into this Catalogo (1765), now held in SLUB.
After the deaths of both August II (1733) and August III (1763) most court records and royal music collections previously held in Warsaw were moved to Dresden and items of music were then integrated into the Dresden collections. Thus, works by the Italian composers based in Poland, including Antonio Duni (a Kapellmeister of the Polnische Kapelle), came into the collection of Dresden’s Catholic court church. See Bacciagaluppi & Stockigt, ‘Italian Manuscripts of Sacred Music in Dresden’, 143, citing Alina Zórawska-Witkowska, ‘The Saxon Court of the Kingdom of Poland’.
Caption title: Messa, à Cinque Voci, et Istrumenti obbligati. Duni. 1745.
This score is in the hand seen in all sources of sacred music by Antonio Duni listed into this Catalogo (1765), now held in SLUB.
After the deaths of both August II (1733) and August III (1763) most court records and royal music collections held in Warsaw were moved to Dresden. The music was then integrated into Dresden collections. Thus, works by the Polish-based Italian composer Antonio Duni, a Kapellmeister of the Polnische Kapelle, came into the collection of Dresden’s Catholic court church. See Bacciagaluppi & Stockigt, ‘Italian Manuscripts of Sacred Music in Dresden’, 143, citing Alina Zórawska-Witkowska, ‘The Saxon Court of the Kingdom of Poland’.
Cover title (hand of Zelenka): No 1 | Stephanus autem F | Offertorium | de | S. Stephano. a 4 | di Giovanni | Deslins.
Parts (8 vocal; 4 instrumental, all in Zelenka’s hand from mid 1720s): Soprano; Soprano R.; Contralto; Contr.Alto R.; Tenore; Tenore R.; Basso; Basso R.; Violone; Tiorba e Violoncello; Organo (figured); Fagotto.
Horn (Hkm, 104) notes this to be one of two compositions by Deslins included among the Pietro Giovannelli (Joannellus) collection, Novi thesauri musici, Bks 1 and 3, published in Venice 1568 in 1568 by A. Gardano. (RISM 15684). The second work is a setting of Veni creator spiritus, Bk. 1. According to GMO most works in this collection were composed by singers of the Imperial Chapel, although a few were attached to the court of Duke Albert of Bavaria.
The Offertorium de S. Stephano is structured in two sections. According to Zelenka’s instruction, organ preluding was to be performed before the second part of the Offertorium was begun. In the middle of the organ part ‘NB Fit praeludium’ is written. This instruction also seen in Zelenka‘s hymn settings. All other parts have ‘Praeludio tacet’ at this point.</text>

Cover title (hand of Zelenka): a (upper left) | Nr. 2 (upper right) | Aria: | Pie Jesu | Tenor | VV 2 | Viola | e | Basso Conti: | de S: Conti.
This is a da capo aria without markings or reworkings by Zelenka.
It now is is established that this item is a work by Francesco Conti. See Horn, Hkm, 166–7.
It is possible that Zelenka met the tiorbist Francesco Conti during time he spent in Vienna (between 1716 and 1719) and in Prague also (1723), when Conti played in the performance of Fux’s opera Costanza e Fortezza.
Incipit is given in Zelenka-Dokumentation, 54, Nr. 85a. Horn (Die wichtigsten Schreiber, 164) identifies the copyist of Mus. 2190-E-1 as ZS O.
NB: A score is kept in Dresden (Mus. 2190-I-1) of Conti’s cantata for solo soprano (text by Apostolo Zeno), L’Istro, a work composed for the marriage celebrations in Vienna (1719) between Austrian Archduchess Maria Josepha and the Saxon Electoral Prince Friedrich August II.</text>
