A hand other than the composer’s (is it Ristori?) is responsible for some instrumental colle parte additions to this score. (See pages 4, 12–13, 16–17, and 19) which seems to be an early acquisition for the music repertoire of the Dresden Catholic court church.
See Gerhard Poppe, ‘Kontinuität der Institution’, 78.
The copyist proposed by Jóhannes Ágústsson is Giovanni Battista Vivaldi, father of Antonio Vivaldi. This is supported by Michael Talbot, and it reinforces his claim that ‘Vivaldi senior copied music not only by his son, but also on behalf of his son (or of members of their close circle)’. See Michael Talbot, Miscellany, in Studi Vivaldiani 15 (2015), 183–4.</text>

Incipits in Zekenka-Dokumentation, 59, Nr. 138.
Following the death of the Imperial widow Eleonore Magdalena Theresia of Austria (1720) – Maria Josepha’s grandmother – her Kapellmeister Mathias Oettel became a tenor of the Imperial Hofkapelle. In 1721 he was appointed to the position of choral director of the Schotten church in Vienna.
If Zelenka gave this mass its title (Missa S. Gertrudis), performance on two feast days are to be considered:
1. St Gertrude of Nivelles (626-59), whose feast, 17 March, is frequently listed with the rank of double in the Lutheran, Gregorian, and Julian calendars published in the HStCal for 1729. 1731, 1732, 1733, 1735, 1737.
2. St Gertrudis ‘the Great’ (d 1302), Benedictine nun and visionary, educated in the nunnery of Helfta (Thuringia) where she made her profession. Pope Innocent XI added her name to the Roman Martyrology in 1677. It is reported (Oxford Dictionary of Saints, 207) that in 1738, at the request of the King of Poland, August III (Zelenka’s patron), her feast (15 or 16 November) was extended to all countries by Pope Clement XII. This feast, however, is not listed in any liturgical calendar published in the HStCal between 1728 and 1751.
Zelenka entered three complete masses by Oettl into his Inventarium under ‘Missae integrae’: 7/27 (entered c1729): ‘Ettl’, Missa S. Gertrudis (‘cum Parti’); 8/31 (entered c1729): ‘Ettl’, Missa Gloriae (‘cum Partitura’: See the missing anonymous entry, III/27/9); 11/52a (entered between c1733–36): ‘Oettel’, Missa Sancti Spiritus.
Horn (Hkm, 155) identifies the copyist as ZS O (‘Die wichtigsten Schreiber’, 164).
At the time of writing no Bohemian concordance was found.</text>

The composer of two Ave Regina listings in this Catalogo (1765, see also II/N/6/8) attributed to ‘Noack‘ is named ‘Novak’ by Zelenka on the scores. Perhaps this is Jan František Novák (1706–1771) who succeeded Antonín Görbig (named Gerbich in this Catalogo of 1765) as choral director of the Metropolitan cathedral of Prague (St Vitus) in 1737. Although a relatively productive musician, Novák is regarded as being of little importance.
On Jan František Novák, see Marie Kostílková, ‘An Outline of the History of the St. Vitus’ Music Choir’, 95, and Horn (Hkm, 140–42). It is probable that Jan František Novák is the composer listed by Zelenka in his Inventarium as ‘Novari’ (and sometimes as ‘Anonymi’ and ‘N. N.’).
Incipit is given in Zekenka-Dokumentation, 59, Nr. 137b.</text>

Zelenka identified the composer of this work (Mus. 2883-D-1) as ‘S: Antonio Negri’. Perhaps this is the father (named Antonio) of the contralto Maria Catterina Negri. Antonio Negri was with his daughter in Prague during the 1720s where she was engaged to sing for the opera theatre of Count Franz Anton von Sporck. See Daniel Freeman, The Opera Theater of Count Franz Anton von Sporck in Prague, 31 n. 55; 341–2.
One instruction in Zelenka’s hand is given to copyists page 18 (‘27. NB Soprano Incipit cu[m] Alto et Basso’) .
Wolfgang Horn identifies the copyist of Mus. 2883-D-1 as ZS 1 ( = from early 1730s). See Zelenka-Studien I, 174.
Concordance: The setting is listed by Štefan as an anonymous work from the collection of the Prague cathedral of St Vitus. It has an identical incipit and scoring requirements as those shown in the Catalogo (1765): [ANONYMOUS] ([1582] Sign. 1517): LAUDATE PUERI: Ms. : Prov.: AG [= Antonín Görbig/ Gerbich], JFN [= Jan František Novák]: x C, A, B, Vno I II, A Vla, Org.
Concordances:
1. A copy of this setting held in Prague (Národní Muzeum; CZ-Pnm, XXX-A-109). The cover bears the statement ‘Antonio Negri—Beatus vir | Osecky Kláster’.
2. Another setting of Beatus vir, attributed to Cozzi (listed in Zelenka’s Inventarium, 35/7, and in his collection Psalmi varii, Beatus Nr. 9), once kept in the Metropolitan cathedral, Prague (CZ-Pak). Its incipit is almost identical with the incipit of Antonio Negri’s setting of this psalm listed in the Catalogo (1765). See Štefan: COZZI ([309] Sign. 296), prov. Sehling. Scoring for C, A, Vno I II, Vla conc., Org.
Incipit given in Zekenka-Dokumentation, 58, Nr. 130.
The only title of this copy, in Zelenka's hand, is on the front page of a grey-blue double envelope (pages 1,2 and final sheet), before the start of the score (p 3) – which is entirely in the hand of Schreiber 1 – there is a remainder of a sheet that has been cut out, which may have been the original title page. – Only a fragment bearing the title label exists of a light-blue envelope of the chapel archive added in the second half of the 18th century. Cover title (hand of Zelenka): Nro 1mo (right) | Magnificat | à 4 | C: A: T: B: | Violini 2 | Viola | e | Basso Continuo | Novari (replacing the deleted ‘Ignoti’).
At the conclusion of the score is written in Zelenka’s hand: A M D G V M OO SS H AAtqu PP R. This dedication suggest that this setting was substantially revised by Zelenka. See Dr. Landmann (SLB card catalogue, below).
This score is in Zelenka’s hand, and was copied c.1727/8. The text is in the hand of a copyist.
Two labels to correspond with Hofkirche catalogues of 1765 (damaged) and c1784 are kept with the score. The earlier fragment reads: Schranck No: II. | N. 6. Fach 12. Lag[e] | Magnificat | à 4 voc[i] | co’ VVni Viola e Basso | Partitura sola | del Sigr Novari. Incipit. The second to correspond to the entry in the missing Catalogo (c1784): Lit: N. Schranck No. II. |4. Fach 13. Lage | Magnificat | à 4 voci | co’ VVni Viola ed Org. | Partitura sola | del Sigr Novari. Incipit.
See Stockigt, ‘The Vespers Psalms of Jan Dismas Zelenka’, App. 2, No. 10.
Concordances: Although the instrumental incipit (above) for this Magnificat setting does not correspond with the vocal incipit given by Štefan for the Magnificat, this comes from Novák’s Vesperae solennes ([968] Sign. 929) once held by the Metropolitan cathedral of Prague.
