Title A name given to the resource Moog ‘Signature’ theremin Subject The topic of the resource Free Music Description An account of the resource Metal, electronics In 1932 Percy Grainger attended a concert of musical pieces performed on a new instrument called the theremin. This instrument, invented in 1920 by  Russian physicist Lev Sergeyevich Termen (known in  the USA as Léon Theremin) was a revelation to Grainger. It could produce gliding musical tones of any pitch with freely variable dynamics. When he first heard it, Grainger considered the instrument to be ‘perfectly able to carry out my intentions’. Grainger hoped to work with Léon Theremin while the Russian was in America, but this idea was thwarted when Theremin returned to Russia in 1938. Grainger scored some of his Free Music for performance on the theremin. Title A name given to the resource Sliding Pipe Free Music Invention Subject The topic of the resource Free Music Description An account of the resource Masonite, wire, string, tape This invention was Grainger's first attempt at constructing an instrument which could glide smoothly from one tone to the next and which was controlled by a 'musical score' rather than a player. The sound was produced by two swanee whistles or 'Sliding Pipes' as Grainger referred to them. The whistles' pitch was altered by moving the 'musical score' - the horizontal wave cut from cardboard - past the whistles' plunge (or piston). The wave then moved the plunge up or down in accordance with the score, creating smooth gliding tones. Burnett Cross suggested that Grainger try positioning the instrument upright, so gravity would work in its favour. This led to further experiments such as the Kangaroo Pouch Free Music Machine with its upright columns. An accomplished visual artist and highly analytical thinker, Grainger documented his Free Music experiments extensively and in great detail. The illustrations themselves show an innovative approach to documentary practice, inhabiting a middle ground between scientific accounts and aesthetically rewarding artwork. These documents reflect his desire to make ‘pretty machines’ that were at once both visually exciting and mechanically functional. A large strip of paper (not present), like a pianola roll with holes cut at calculated points, was to be rolled steadily over the multi-coloured plastic fins, below which sit an array of accordion reeds tuned micro-tonally to approximate the effect of gliding tones when adjacent reeds are played. The machine was to be operated with a vacuum cleaner providing the necessary suction to draw air through the holes in the paper roll and then through the reeds. These scores were reproduced by Grainger in this Free Music Legend which he made for the Grainger Museum’s official opening on 10 December 1938. The musical scores are like graphs: the y-axis indicates a pitch range from A sharp below middle C upwards for two octaves, and a volume range from ppp to fff; the x-axis indicates the flow of time. The scores were extremely difficult to perform accurately, and Grainger realised he would have to create his own instruments to bring his Free Music concept to reality. Keen to explore the possibilities of Free Music, but lacking instruments that would readily play the ‘noteless’ gliding tones it required, Grainger and Cross modified existing instruments to make approximations of the intended effect. This Butterfly piano has had its lid and front panels removed, and some of the strings have been lengthened using nails as supports. The strings have then been re-tuned to musical pitches much closer to each other than regular piano notes. This instrument was tuned in 1/6 tones, so that playing a scale on it would produce a wave-like gliding tone effect.
