Portrait of a young boy and his dog on a leash

Subject

Description

Ambrotype, paper binding

30.6 x 25.3 cm

This photograph is an ambrotype, a process only used widely for a short time between approximately 1855 and 1865, which places this image of unidentified boys quite early in the history of photography. Who were they? Why were they being photographed? They look like orphanage residents or Borstal inmates.
