Silver gelatin print. 35.2 x 27.2 cm Swedish artist, poet and amateur musician Ella Viola Ström (1889-1979) married Grainger in 1928. Here she is depicted on her veranda in White Plains, New York, in a photograph taken by her neighbour, the commercial photographer Fred Morse. Clothing design was one of Ella Grainger’s interests, and in this photograph she is modelling a recent creation. <a href="https://omeka.cloud.unimelb.edu.au/grainger/files/show/564">The coat</a>, made of blue bath mat fabric, was worn variously by Ella and Percy Grainger, and it still in the Grainger Museum Collection

The sofa in the image is made of a sofa mattress placed on suitcases, covered by East Indian print. Inscription on the back: Springfield | MO |W377-1-12 (minus? 10).

Black and white photograph. 25.1 x 19.4 cm Swedish poet and painter, Ella Viola Strom, married Percy Grainger at the Hollywood Bowl, Southern California, USA, on 9 August 1928. The wedding occurred in front of a huge audience, estimated as between 15,000 and 23,000, at the end of a concert of Grainger's own compositions. Ella Grainger performed alongside other musicians, under the conducting baton of Percy Grainger, in a piece of music written especially for the occasion and as a wedding gift to her: "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_N8O3rCrSrw&ab_channel=MelbourneSymphonyOrchestra-Topic">To a Nordic Princess</a>".<br /><br />

Joseph Taylor of Saxby-All-Saints, North Lincolnshire, was a bailiff on a large estate in the latter part of his life. He was also a traditional folksinger. In the year this photograph was taken he recorded nine of his songs with the Gramophone Company. Percy Grainger befriended him and set Taylor’s version of the traditional song, Rufford Park Poachers, in his Lincolnshire Posey suite.
