A very important position in large studios was the printer, and Harris & Ewing employed experts in this field—a role that combined high-level technical skills with an ability to interpret the ‘house’ aesthetic. This portrait of Tokugawa Iemasa, Japanese diplomat and onetime lover of Ella Grainger, is a fine print with rich, velvety dark tones, carefully modulated skin tones and even chemically bleached highlights.
