From La vita e le opere di Giulio Cesare Croce, 444-445:
L'oste Bastiano detto il Carotta o Carota, fiorentino, teneva nella sua osteria un covo di ladri, di borsaiuoli e di baldracche coi quali divideva gli illeciti e delittuosi lucri. Scoperto, fu impiccato con una decina di soci alle finestre del palazzo Comunale l'ultimo di di gennaio 1587. Il libro dopo aver notato il nome del Carota e di undici suoi compagni, quasi tutti forastieri, aggiunge
Furono appiccati per essere stati promotori di un sollevamento, quale poi non riusci.
Dovremo credere ad un mistero, ad un delitto di iStato o ad una semplice razzia di ladruncoli come ritiene anche il Ghiselli nel suoi Annali mss.
Certo che questo fatto, sia per se, sia per la quantita degli impiccati fece un certo fracasso. Trovo infatti una, senza anno e nome, che contiene una disgraziatissima canzonetta di venti strofe di sei versi ottonari ciascuna, quando lo sono, ed il ritornello 'la'. Canzonette che fa vedere almeno quanto il Croce fosse superiore ai suoi concorrenti.

We'll have to believe in a mystery, a murder of state or a simple raid of thieves as Ghiselli also believes in his Annals mss.
Of course I did this, both for itself, and for the amount of the hanged made some noise. I found in fact, without name and year, which contains a wretched song of twenty stanzas of six lines each octosyllabic, when they are, and the chorus 'la'. Ditties that shows how much Croce was superior to his competitors.

Come Lepre, che sente il Cacciatore,

Seicento pecorelle, havea de' suoi,
Che havan pasconlando per quel piano;
Gl'haveaammazzati altri Porci, e Buoi,

E gli ammazzò seicento pecorelle,

In questo piano v'era un'hosteria,
Benedetto, e i compagni erano entrati,
Quando vidder venir per una via
Il Capitan d'Evoli, e molti armati,
Ogni compagno in punto si mettia
Con li schioppetti, e con li can calati,
Come fu presso sparar con furore,
Merir sei Sbirri, e lo Governatore.
Benedetto era da rabia aßalito,

E gionse quella sera à Santo Vito,
E d'assai Buffal fè crudel vendetta:

O giornata crudele, empio pianetta;

Havendo fatto poi quel gran macello,
Tutti le Buffalar fece chiamare,

Anzi più disse à ciaschedun di quello
Siate al patrone, e fatevi pagare,
De i Bufal morti dite allo patrone,
Che gl'hà uccisi Benedetto Mangone.
Giunti li Buffalari allo patrone,

Pigliò il Baron, che stava inginochhiato.

Account of events that are the subject of the ballad

The fierce bandit Benedetto Mangone, headed a gang of robbers who terrorized long campaigns of Eboli. Captured and brought to Naples, the bandit was placed in chains on a cart and taken to the streets to expose him to ridicule while the executioner with pincers tore the meat. Finally, April 17, 1587 at the Market was put on the wheel and killed with a hammer.

Marco Sciarra was the follower and imitator of Benedetto Mangone, of whom it is recorded that having stopped a party of travellers which included Torquato Tasso, he allowed them to pass unharmed out of his reverence for poets and poetry. Mangone was finally taken, and beaten to death with hammers at Naples.
He and his like are the heroes of much popular verse, written in ottava rima, and beginning with the traditional epic invocation to the muse. A fine example is The most beautiful history of the life and death of Pietro Mancino, chief of Banditi.[3] It begins:

In Kingdom of Naples, every successive revolutionary disturbance saw a recrudescence of brigandage down to the unification of 1860-1861. The source of the trouble was the support the brigands (like Carmine Crocco from Basilicata, the most famous outlaw during the Italian unification)[9] received from various kinds of manutengoli (maintainers) - great men, corrupt officials, political parties, and the peasants who were terrorized, or who profited by selling the brigands food and clothes.[3]

In this state the horse on the extreme right is black (white in the earlier state), the boy's slate trailing on the ground was only half shaded in the earlier state, but is now darkened.

The March of the Guards to Finchley, also known as The March to Finchley or The March of the Guards, is a 1750 oil-on-canvas painting by English artist William Hogarth, owned by and on display at the Foundling Museum.
This painting depicts London during the Jacobite Rebellion in 1746. Toward the end of 1745 concerns were raised that the capital would be undefended in the event of a Jacobite attack. William Augustus, the Duke of Cumberland, Commander of the British Army, decided to garrison troops to the north of the city as a precaution. In the foreground soldiers can be seen assembling at the Tottenham Court Road turnpike.

About:
This 16th century Irish tune was used, according to Flood (1906), in 1576 for a ballad on the death of a great patron of music, Walter Devereux, Earl of Essex, in Dublin, entitled "Welladay, or Essex's Last Goodnight." The tune appears in several early collections, including William Ballet's Lute Book (1593), Fitzwilliam Virginal Book (where the setting is by the famous English composer William Byrde {1528-1625}), and William Foster's Virginal Book (1624). It was licensed as a ballad in 1565-6 and is mentioned in Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor (Act II, Scene 3, where Falstaff says, "I see what thou wert, if Fortune thy foe were not, Nature thy friend."). In fact, various songs and ballads came to be sung to the tune, including an early ballad "Titus Andronicus Complaint," on which Shakespeare founded his play, and most of these songs seem to have been about themes of gloom, misery, and death; Chappell (1859) says "Indeed, its mournful character was so thoroughly established that none but the most lugubrious matter seems ever to have been sung to it." The tune appears as "Farewell, Fair Armelia" which appears in Luke Wadding's (the Bishop of Ferns) A Pious Garland of Godly Songs for the Solace of his Friends and Neighbors in their Afflictions, 1680. Early references, according to Flood, also date from 1649-50 from a "contemporary chronicle" which described Irish pipers attached to Lord Inchiquin's army which drew off from Naas to the march of "Fortune My Foe." In 1676 the tune (as it appears in Playford's Choice Airs and Songs) was used by Irishman Thomas Duffet for (one) setting of his lyric "Since Coelia's My Foe" (another setting is set to "Limerick's Lamentation"). "'Fortune My Foe' was sung and played so frequently at public executions that it became known as 'The Hanging Tune'...'Fortune My Foe' originated in Ireland. The setting written here is believed to be the earliest version" (Williamson, 1976, p.39).

English, Country Dance Tune. The air was published in John Playford's English Dancing Master (London, 1651, and all subsequent editions), Thomas Robinson's Schoole of Musicke (1603), and D'Urfey's Pills to Purge Melancholy (1707). The original ballad, now lost, appears in the registers of the Stationers' Company as early as 1565-6. There are some similarities with the Welsh tune “Meillionen,” of more recent vintage.
"Row Well Ye Mariners" was one of the country dance tunes recorded by the Victor band in 1915 at Camden, New Jersey, arranged by English folk song and dance collector Cecil Sharp, who was visiting America at the time. Sharp received "session supervisor" credits for the recording.

Marie Manning (1821–13 November 1849) was a Swiss domestic servant who was hanged outside Horsemonger Lane Gaol, London, England, on 13 November 1849, after she and her husband Frederick were convicted of the murder of her lover, Patrick O'Connor, in the case that became known as the "Bermondsey Horror." Another shocking murder I have for to declare,
At Bermondsey, near London, number three, Minerva Square,
Master and Mistress Manning, if you'll listen here awhile,
For the murder of O'Connor, a man from Erin's Isle.
O'Connor was a Guager in the London Docks,
An invitation from Maria to dine with her he gets,
She desired him to attend at five the next day,
The Mannings were determined Patrick Connor for to slay.
O'Connor left his lodgings - to the Mannings went straightway,
But little did he think that night that they would him betray,
But those two barbarians, as you shall understand,
For a long time previous this horrid deed had planned.
They shot him with a pistol - with a crowbar bruised his head,
They stripped the clothes from off his back when that he was dead
His legs they doubled up and with a cord them tied,
They buried him in a hole by their kitchen fireside.
That evening after the murder, Maria Manning went
Unto O'Connor's lodgings - on robbery she was bent,
She took both cash and documents, and many other things,
From O'Connor's lodgings, at different times she brings.
She took the train from London to Edinburgh town,
There she was apprehended all for that murderous crime,
Then they conveyed her back again to London with all speed,
There to take her trial for that horrid barbarous deed.
Frederick George Manning to the Isle of Jersey went,
To shun the ends of justice, for America he was bent,
Then he was taken prisoner for the murder they had done,
He said, 'Is that wretch taken?' - meaning Mistress Manning.
They told him she was taken - they knew he meant his wife,
He said, 'Then I am satisfied, for that will save my life,
'Twas she who fired the pistol - gave O'Connor his death wound,'
But they brought Manning back with them to famed London town.
Their trial it is over and they are both condemned to die,
May the Lord have mercy on your souls, the judge to them did cry
And I hope this will a warning be unto both young and old,
Never to commit a murder for the sake of cursed gold.

Marie Manning (1821–13 November 1849) was a Swiss domestic servant who was hanged outside Horsemonger Lane Gaol, London, England, on 13 November 1849, after she and her husband Frederick were convicted of the murder of her lover, Patrick O'Connor, in the case that became known as the "Bermondsey Horror." It was the first time a husband and wife had been executed together in England since 1700.

Attention give, both old and young
Of high and low degree;
Think, while this mournful tale is sung,
Of our sad misery.
We've slain O'Connor, both good and kind,
Who oft to us has been a friend,
For which we must our lives resign,
Our time is near an end.
Oh! hark, what mean that dreadful sound?
It sinks deep in our souls.
It is the bell that sounds our knell,
How solemn is the toll.
See, thousands are assembled
Around the fatal place,
To gaze on our approaching fate,
And witness our disgrace.
Let pilfering passions not intrude,
For to lead you astray,
From step to step it will delude,
And bring you to dismay.
Think of the wretched guilty Mannings,
Who thus die on a tree,
A death of shame, we've nought to blam
But our own base infamy.
Mercy on earth we'll not iimplore,
To crave it would be vain.
Our hands are dyed with human gore,
None can wash off the stain.
But the merits of a Saviour,
Whose mercy alone we crave,
Good Christians pray, so thus we die,
We may has pardon have.
