Claes the Miller and his lover,
They sat together drinking wine.
Love was the topic of their conversation.

"Oh, Heyle, my dear sweet Heyle,
the wicked gossips are accusing me,
I am worried they will kill me!

A short time later
messengers were sent for Claes,
in order that he should appear before the lords.

When Claes the Miller appeared before the lords,
the lords deliberated.
How miserable he felt!

"Claes the Miller, one thing we must ask you:
these fur clothes you are wearing,
can you wear them in good conscience?"

"These fur clothes I am wearing,
they were given to me by a beautiful maiden;
surely she will give me more of them."

They gave him coins in his hand:
"Claes the Miller, you must abandon the area,
You must now leave Brunswick!"

"Farewell, Brunswick, farewell my country!
Farewell, golden (precious) property of my heart!
I will still spend the night there tonight (meaning: one last time)."

The wicked gossips overheard this;
They followed in Claes the Miller's footsteps
and brought him into custody at night.

When he entered Brunswick,
the women cried, the men laughed.
How miserable he felt!

But, do you know, what Claes the Miller said
when he appeared before the lords there,
with his laughing mouth?

"Sir bailiff, you have three little daughters,
You think that they are all virgins,
But, sadly, none of them are.

One is my lover,
the other is carrying my child,
And I have slept with the third one!"

"Sir bailiff, ignore him,
He talks like a condemned man,
He does not know what he is babbling on about."

But, do you know, what Claes the Miller said
when he climbed the ladder
with his eyes blindfolded?

"In all of Brunswick, there is no house
where does not live a young Claes the Miller
or a miss / lady / female Miller!"

"Claes the Miller, now shut your big mouth!
Should you not have bragged like this, you would have escaped,
But now you must certainly hang."

Translation by Cecile Morree
