JACOB MULLER, alias JACO, Gerabraakt.

Nu ben ik in een droeve staat,
Ik mag met regt wel klagen
Ik werd van elk gebaat,
Myn lyden is te groot,
My naderd nu de dood;
Ik zit in groote nood,
Ik zit in groote nood.

Wat helpt nu al myn moedigheld,
En myn vrymoedig spreken:
Wat helpt nu al de tyd,
Die ik verwerf o Goon,
Sterf ik nu duizend doon,
En wagt in ‘t kort nu loon, &c.

Ik heb myn eigen val gezogt;
Wat hulp myn ‘s Gravenhage,
Daar ik weird heen gebrogt,
Hoe is myn hart verschrikt,

Myn vonnis kort ontving,
Ik moet ô droevig Lot
Gerabraakt op ‘t Schavot,
Vorrr jeder een ten spot.

Heb ik dan zoo veel kwaad gedaan
Dat men myn hoofd daar nog,
Zal van liet Ligchaam slaan,
Ik moet te regt gesteld,
Myn vonnis is geveld,
Geen plyten nu meer geld, &c.

Gerabraakt Gode en terwyl
Ik levent voel die pynen,
Met een Scherpregters Byl,
Myn hals daar afgesneen;
Hoe werd myn ziel bestreen.
Door klagte en geween. &c.

Myn boeijes viele lastig zwaar
Die ik heb moeten dragen,
Die nu nog droever maar;
Te sterven door beuls hand,
Voor al de Wereld schand,
Ik ga ten Offerhand, &c.

Ik geef myn over aan ‘t geregt,
Ik kan het niet ontvlugten,
De dood myn aangezegt,
Die smaal ik met geduld,
De tyd is haast vervuld,
O Heer; vergest myn schuld,

Neem doch een spiegel mensche al,
Het kwaad dat loond zyn meester,
En brengt ons tot een val;
Weest nooit zoo zeer verblind,
Dat gy het kwaad bemind,
Wyl men zyn loon haast vind,
Wyl men zyn loon haast vind.

Jacob Muller, alias Jaco, broken on the wheel.

Now I am in a sad state,
I may rightly complain
I was from every benefit,
My suffering is too great,
Death now approaches me;
I am in great need,
I am in great need.

How does all my courage help me now,
And my bold speaking:
How does all the time help me now,
Which I gain, oh Gods,
I now die a thousand deaths,
And I await payment shortly, &c.

I have sought my own trap;
What helps me [in] The Hague,
There I was brought to,
How is my heart frightened,
I have suffocated myself,
And weighed me in evil, &c.

The Heaven which never leaves unpunished evil and sinister atrocities,
Appears to drive me, oh!
Upon who do I deposit my complaints,
Oh, unheard flag, &c.

Which went through my heart and soul
When I, in The Hague,
Received my sentence shortly,
I must be, oh sad Fate,
Geradbraakt upon the scaffold,
Ridiculed before everyone.

Have I then done so much evil
That people will also have my head be hewed off from my body
I must be executed,
My verdict has been passed,
No more pleading matters now, &c.

Geradbraakt Gods, and whilst
I feel those pains alive,
With an executioner’s axe,
My neck was cut off;
How my soul was contested
By complaints and crying, &c.

My shackles were difficultly heavy
Which I must now bear,
Which is sadder still;
To die by executioner’s hand,
Shamed before all the World,
I will be sacrificed, &c.

I submit myself to the justice,
I cannot escape it,
Death is my view,
Which I lessen with patience,
Time is almost up,
Oh Lord; forgive my guilt,

Take but a mirror, all people,
The evil rewards its master,
And brings us to a fall;
Never be so much blinded,
That you love evil,
Whilst people always pay the price,
Whilst people always pay the price.

Notes

Translation Notes:
1. In the text it reads ‘always does not’
2. The first three lines of this stanza needed grammatical rearrangement in English and are thus translated into a single line.
3. ‘flag’ (a different spelling from ‘vlag’) does not appear to have any other metaphorical meanings other than that it may indicate anything ‘flag-shaped’ (i.e. rectangular).
4. Literal translation would be ‘whilst people their payment always find,’ which invokes the Dutch saying ‘boontje komt op zijn loontje’ (‘what goes around comes around’). In this context, however, ‘loon’ (what one deserves or what one is paid) implies that the one who loves evil will always pay the price for it.
